Job Role Summary
The Staff Development Team Leader coordinates and delivers training, mentoring, and professional development for Housing and Neighborhood Health staff, including Environmental Health Specialists, Senior Environmental Health Specialists, and support staff. This role combines continuing staff development, field coaching, program oversight, and direct operational support to help ensure employees are confident, consistent, and effective in code enforcement, education, and outreach activities. The position also manages the hotel and motel inspection program and staff and partners with Housing leadership to support policy implementation, quality assurance, and departmental goals.
Day in the Life:
A typical day may include coaching staff in the field, leading hands-on training in the office, reviewing hotel and motel inspection activity, and mentoring employees through difficult enforcement or communication situations. This role regularly shifts between trainer, supervisor, field resource, and program partner to support both staff development and day-to-day public health operations.
Essential Duties
Training, Mentoring, & Staff Development (45%)
- Develop and maintain training materials, reference guides, and performance resources for Housing staff.
- Deliver hands-on training in office, field, and community settings.
- Provide coaching, refresher training, and mentoring to support employee development and performance.
- Assess training needs and coordinate professional development, cross-training, and educational opportunities.
Hotel/Motel Inspection Program Oversight (25%)
- Manage the hotel and motel inspection program and assigned staff.
- Conduct inspections, investigations, sweeps, and follow-up activities.
- Provide guidance on complex or high-profile cases.
- Maintain and review program reports and ensure communication regarding violations and complaints.
- Support documentation and testimony for hotel and motel licensing hearings.
Supervision, Quality, & Operational Leadership (20%)
- Supervise inspection staff, providing instruction, performance feedback, and coaching.
- Conduct performance evaluations and promote accountability and professional growth.
- Perform quality assurance audits to ensure consistency and compliance.
- Participate in hiring activities and foster a professional, positive work environment.
Associated Job Duties
Code Enforcement Support, Communication, & Department Operations (10%)
- Provide guidance on code interpretation, enforcement procedures, and court-related activities.
- Communicate with residents, officials, media, and stakeholders regarding environmental health issues and enforcement actions.
- Support program planning, outreach, special projects, and on-call operations.
- Collaborate with community and government partners and represent the department at meetings and public events.
- Participate in emergency preparedness, public health response activities, and other duties as assigned.
