Duke Recreation & Physical Education Internship

 

The mission of Duke Recreation & Physical Education (Rec & PE) is to provide diverse opportunities that foster learning, community and healthy active lifestyles.

 

Position Overview

 

The internship program is designed for current undergraduate students with an interest in developing professional skills related to collegiate recreation and wellness programming. Internship experiences can be customized based on your educational and career pursuits with opportunities in the following areas: Academics (teaching physical education lecture and activity courses), Aquatics, Facility Management, Fitness, Intramural Sports, Marketing, Outdoor Adventures, Special Events, and Sport Clubs. Internships are in-person at Duke University in Durham, NC. Work hours and the duration of internships can vary based on academic program requirements.

 

Compensation - $21 per hour

Requirements

Must be a current undergraduate student to apply. Preference will be given to students seeking an internship opportunity that satisfies graduation requirements. Experience with customer service, student development, and promoting healthy lifestyles is preferred but not required.

Our Program Areas & Opportunities

 

Academics

a.Assist with creation of syllabus.

b.Assist with course instruction.

 

Facilities

a. Work facility monitor/weight attendant shifts at Wilson and Brodie.

b. Get experience communicating with members, resolving conflict, and

managing risks.

c. Special projects could include operational efficiencies like EAPs.

 

Outdoor Adventures

a. Assist with climbing wall in Wilson.

b. Oversee the provided special event for the semester.

c. Assist with OA trips/excursions.

 

Marketing

a. Assist with social media content creation.

b. Tracking and Applying promotional analytics.

c. Assist with campaign development.

 

Intramurals

a. Assist with scheduling, registration, and staffing.

b. Assist with equipment inventory.

c. Help with special events/tournaments.

 

Sport Clubs

a. Assist with home game management.

b. Assist with all scheduling.

c. Assist with budgeting and travel.

 

Aquatics

a. Assist with Risk Management - go to events to manage and evaluate.

b. Programming - learning how to set up a program.

c. Instruct CPR to help with trainings.

 

Business/Finance

a. Looking at good financial practices.

b. Researching and looking at new trends.

c. Data analysis and consolidating information.

 

Fitness & Wellness

a. Updating existing programs.

b. Implementing new ideas for fitness and wellness programs.

 

IT/Technology

a. Assist with Equipment Refresh. (Customer service for Recreation staff)

b. Imaging and cloning machines. (Automation processing)

c. Learn how to manage Fusion and expose students to recreation management software.

 

People & Culture

a. Assisting with Engagement Committee.

b. Work with program areas to synthesize employee handbooks.

c. Assist with the organization and coordination of activities.
