Director, Obesity Communications

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this pivotal role, you will lead the global communications strategy and execution for the chronic weight management indication for MariTide, Amgen’s lead asset for obesity and related conditions. By partnering closely with the cross-functional obesity and related conditions team, you will ensure the delivery of high-impact communications that align with the MARITIME clinical development program.

You will report directly to the Executive Director of Obesity Communications, who oversees the integrated corporate affairs plan for Amgen's emerging obesity portfolio. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence and shape the communications strategy around one of Amgen's most impactful therapeutic areas.

  • Develop and Execute Global Communications Strategy: Lead the creation and execution of a global communication strategy for MariTide’s chronic weight management indication, ensuring alignment with the broader obesity and related conditions portfolio.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders—including patients, policymakers, media, and Amgen employees—to ensure consistent messaging and engagement across all channels.

  • Data and Milestone Communications: Craft and implement communications strategies for key data milestones and product development updates, ensuring clarity and impact for both internal and external audiences.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with the clinical, medical, regulatory, and commercial teams to ensure communications support the ongoing development of MariTide, aligning with the MARITIME clinical program.

  • Internal Communication Leadership: Lead internal communication efforts to ensure Amgen employees are informed and engaged with developments related to MariTide and its chronic weight management indication.

Location:

Ideally based in the Los Angeles area or Californnia/West Coast remote, with the ability to travel to Amgen's HQ in Thousand Oaks, CA as needed.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of communications or public relations experience

Or

Master’s degree and 7 years of communications or public relations experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of communications or public relations experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 - 12 years within communications or public relations

  • Deep understanding of the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry or health care

  • Proven ability to develop and execute multi-faceted strategic communications campaigns in a matrixed organization

  • Strategic and creative thinker with the ability to truly understand business challenges and priorities and develop actionable programs that integrate soundly with business objectives

  • Meaningful experience in social and digital media, earned media relations, issues management and internal communications

  • Passion for the role, paired with strong written, spoken and interpersonal communication skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to productively navigate a challenging and dynamic environment and adapt to rapid changes

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and planning skills

  • Collaboratively work with a diverse group of people and backgrounds
