About the role

Supernal is at the forefront of creating emerging mobility solutions that will foster the development of human-centered cities. We are designing a completely new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft tailored to the mobility needs of future cities. This allows passengers a seamless intermodal journey that safely transports them to their final destination. We fuse research in autonomy, robotics, aviation and services to define a new category of mobility for the world’s communities. We believe in creative thinking and collaboration to help build a better mobility experience for everyone, improving people’s ability to move – whether for work or play.

What we do:

The Sr. Systems Engineer is responsible for the overall development of the EPU system (electric motor/inverter/gearbox) by establishing the system architecture, defining requirements, and creating and analyzing system safety (software and hardware). This position helps to define the system standard methodologies and system philosophy. This includes coordination of internal resources at Supernal for joint development collaboration with external suppliers. This position will work closely with Battery Research & Technology, Flight Control Systems, Vehicle Management Systems, and Test & Evaluation teams.

This position will be required to work on-site 5 days a week.

What you can do:

  • Coordinate requirement capturing and architectural definitions with Supernal internal partners
  • Fulfill the flow down of requirements to support the supplier’s development of components
  • Perform validation of the requirements using simulation or test methods
  • Ensure Verification activities are defined, implemented, and traced back to EPU requirements
  • Participate in design reviews to validate supplier’s efforts on the development of motor controls algorithms for permanent magnet and induction motors
  • Work directly with engineers to define test plans, verification procedures, and review results
  • Assist with execution of test and verification of control algorithms using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and dyno test bench
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight to supplier's EPU system development life cycle
  • Define and mature mechanical, electrical, and communication interfaces with aircraft systems that include airframe, wiring, transmissions, and vehicle management systems
  • Collaborate with suppliers/partners on technical development topics to ensure program milestones are achieved
  • Collaborate with Supernal internal resources to perform System Safety Assessment (according to ARP4761)
  • Coordinate with suppliers on the development of system safety assessment aspects for their scope of work
  • Collaborate with the project management team to establish realistic schedules, budgets, and resource allocation for successful project execution using task management software
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within the engineering team
  • Ensure documentation of design decisions, system configurations, and testing procedures are accurate and comprehensive
  • Partner with PMO organization to implement build plan
  • Up to 10% of domestic and international travel
  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, electrical, or a relevant engineering field required
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in powertrain/propulsion systems engineering field (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience informal requirements capturing (e.g. in DOORS)
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience with aviation standards such as DO-160; SAE ARP4761, and ARP4754
  • Experienced with system safety, including analyzing fault trees, system safety reliability, FHA, SSAs, common mode analysis, and zonal analysis
  • Experience with the development of electric motors and/or power electronics
  • Experience with motor control algorithms and software development
  • Experience working with software-in-the-loop (SIL) systems
  • Experience working with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems and code generation

You may also be able to contribute:

  • Knowledge of RTCA DO-178C and DO-254A preferred
  • Knowledge of JIRA and Confluence preferred
  • Knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering tools (e.g. CAMEO) and methodologies (e.g. SysML) preferred
  • Hands-on experience preferred
  • Experience with 500-1200 VDC systems preferred
  • Experience working in the aviation industry preferred
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies preferred
