Purpose:
The Coordinator of school safety and security position is a professional planning and training position responsible for overseeing the Department of Education’s schools safety and security program in consultation with the Maine School Safety Center’s (MSSC) Director. The position requires significant contact and coordination with school personnel responsible for the day-to-day safety and security of their buildings, such as Assistant Principals, Principals, and any associated persons (SROs, etc.). Work is required throughout the state and extended work hours maybe required determined by operational need. This coordinator position will focus on training those individuals on the most up to date best school safety and security practices, assisting with site assessments, share information on successful tested strategies, and conduct the annual school safety summit. Other responsibilities will include training public safety professionals and first responders on positive interactions with youth, best practice ways of supporting schools, building collaborative teams with schools, assisting the Maine Criminal Justice Academy with training and certification of SROs, physical school building security, cyber threats, response protocols, school culture assessment, and external service linkage to schools to enhance safety. This position will also work closely with the other lanes of service as appropriate to support school safety and security. The development of community and school based restorative practices in coordination with the restorative practices coordinator will be an additional responsibility. The School safety and security coordinator will carry out projects or manage programs, such as the development of new best practice initiatives and grant application and management. This position will serve as the subject matter expert in school safety and security for the Maine Department of Education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current best practices in building security - school specific
- Knowledge of current best practices in building safety- school specific
- Knowledge of specific youth demographic - ACES, trauma informed, emotional intelligence, developmental and mental health issues.
- Knowledge of restorative practices and alternatives to traditional discipline
- Knowledge and skill of instruction and teaching methods using a wide range of pedagogical styles and practices
- Knowledge of crime reduction through environmental design
- Knowledge of the state's school unit organizational structure and familiarity with school positions, culture and dynamics.
- Knowledge of state security and safety standards and regulations.
- Knowledge of behavioral/comprehensive threat assessments.
- Knowledge of contracting methodologies and practices.
- Knowledge of school related safety issues.
- Knowledge of State and Federal data collection requirements.
- Knowledge of the state's RFP and contract process.
- Knowledge of emergency preparedness and school security.
- Knowledge and ability to serve as a crisis resource, if necessary.
- Knowledge of continuity of operation and CPTED
- Knowledge of police youth interaction practices (age appropriate, developmentally appropriate)
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system - courts, police, DAs offices, corrections.
- Knowledge of police/public safety practices, training, culture, and interoperability.
- Ability to gather, analyze and present data.
- Ability to formulate and administer rules and regulations and to recommend changes.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interact with a broad range of customers and state agencies.
