About the role

Job Profile Summary

The Director of Student Life and Development is responsible for the leadership and administration of the Department of Student Life including Intramural Sports, Office of Volunteerism (OVAL), Student Government, Student Leadership, student clubs and organizations, the Student Life Business Office, budget management and the marketing of Student Life events. The position is also responsible for the development, coordination and assessment of co-curricular activities that contribute to student development and success. Furthermore, the Director of Student Life collaborates with administrators, faculty, staff and students across the campus community to develop and promote programs, as well as student leadership opportunities that complement the students' academic experience. As a member of the Student Affairs Leadership team, the Director of Student Life participates in the strategic planning process and works to support all Student Affairs initiatives.

  

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, a Social Science discipline or related field required.
  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education and/or Student Affairs preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Minimum Experience/Training:

  • Six or more years in business or professional related experience at a community college or other institution of higher education and three years of management experience and coordinating student engagement activities such as leadership development programs, Student Life program development.
  • Demonstrated creativity, initiative and innovation in everyday work are highly desired, as is a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and build consensus with multiple constituencies.  

Essential Functions:

  • Daily -15%: Oversees the daily operations of the campus Student Life Program and activities, e.g., intramural sports activities, student clubs and organizations, leadership development initiatives, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Semester Basis -5%: Develops in collaboration with campus leaders and faculty, a student leadership program.
  • Daily -10%: Develops, organizes, administers and evaluates annual special events and activities associated with student life and development initiatives.
  • Daily -5%: Provides leadership for student organizations on issues, such as, establishing new groups, developing programs, travel and organizational problem solving.
  • Daily -10%: Develops and manages operational budget activities, e.g., program expenditures, expense reports, purchase orders, disbursement requests, petty cash, vendor contracts.
  • Daily -5%: Guides and mentors the Student Government Association and student clubs, promoting programs, policies and strategies which enhance their development as student leaders
  • Quarterly-5%: Provides leadership to Student Government Association in all activities related to student body campaigns and elections.
  • Daily -5%: Provides leadership for the development and implementation of marketing and promotional items.
  • Daily -10%: Establishes strategic goals and strategies that support student development within the context of higher education.
  • Semester Basis -5%: Provides leadership in the assessment of student learning outcomes as they relate to Student Life programs and services.
  • Daily -5%: Develops relationships/collaborates with faculty and campus units to ensure Student Life programs/services support student learning, the College's strategic plan and mission.
  • Daily -5%: Negotiates contracts with vendors for entertainment, food and equipment rental for programs and student life activities and special events.
  • Weekly-4%: Provides assistance and support to campus orientations and SLS class presentations.
  • Daily -5%: Hires, trains and evaluates department personnel to maintain high quality and performance.
  • Monthly -2%: Serves on campus and college committees.
  • Annually -2%: Assists with the coordination of graduation activities.
  • Other, As Needed -2%: Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of program /curriculum design and promotion processes; budget preparation, bid and purchasing procedures and expense control, guidelines and compliance requirements for student activities and programs, emerging technologies and internal communication systems used to promote student activities and programs, negotiating contracts with vendors.
