Join the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), where innovation meets infrastructure! At VDOT, we are driven by safety, service to others and a commitment to excellence! These are the foundational drivers of our success and, as a Maintenance Operator, you will play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This opportunity is based at our Zion Crossroads Area Headquarters in beautiful Louisa County where there are many sites to see to help you balance work and personal life. The district is responsible for approximately 10,620 miles of road in Virginia. Approximately 500 employees work within the Culpeper District.

The incumbent will operate heavy equipment and power tools (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor with attachments) and perform manual labor within the Warrenton Residency geographical area.

VDOT Maintenance Operators work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and utilizing hand and power tools in the maintenance of Virginia's roadways. Tasks will include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, roller patching, and several similar highway maintenance activities. You will operate light, medium and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, and more. Completion of pre/post-trip inspections and maintaining equipment readiness are also required duties.

Additional duties include responding to emergencies blocking roadways (traffic accidents, debris, etc.), work zone setup, and providing traffic control to assist with navigating and reopening roadways. During inclement weather, you will prepare for and operate equipment to address conditions impeding roadway travel (snow, ice, etc.).

This position must report to work during emergency operations, which may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Severe weather shifts are typically 12-hours in length.

Safety is VDOT's number one focus, so adhering to proper work site protection, identifying workplace safety hazards, and making safety improvement recommendations is a vital duty of each team member!
