About the role
At Nautilus, we have a big and important mission: improve the health of millions by unleashing the potential of the proteome to accelerate drug development and enable a new world of precision and personalized medicine. We are developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform of unprecedented sensitivity, scale, and ease of use that we believe will democratize access to the proteome – one of the most dynamic and valuable sources of biological insight. To accomplish this, we are pursuing hard scientific problems with an entrepreneurial mindset and creating a world-class team of builders, innovators, and dreamers across a wide range of disciplines. We are looking for a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist to join our Bioinformatics team. Your work will focus on development of new data acquisition and analytics approaches to be incorporated in future iterations of Nautilus instrumentation. To that end, you will work together with the Platform Integration experimental team to support all phases of research from ideation through proof-of-concept. The role is highly collaborative; success is measured by the degree to which you elevate the capabilities of your peers in pursuit of scientific insight. Frequent activities in this role include consulting with experimentalists on experimental design, implementing data visualizations and statistical approaches to answer key experimental questions, building pipelines to automate common analysis tasks, and designing databases to organize experimental data and enable longitudinal analysis. This role reports to the Associate Director of Bioinformatics and is based in San Carlos, CA. A minimum of three days in office, preferred.
Responsibilities
- You will contribute to analysis of Nautilus data at various phases of processing including image analysis, object registration, image alignment, stochastic binding data analysis, single-molecule identification, and quantification.
- You will prototype novel data analysis and visualization approaches to support research in a fast-paced environment with input from experimentalists.
- You will create, maintain, and extend experimentalist-facing data processing pipelines accessible through a web-based user-interface.
- You will devise strategies for capturing experimental data and metadata in Nautilus databases amenable for future longitudinal analyses.
- You will leverage an understanding of capabilities and limitations of existing bioinformatics solutions at Nautilus to inform plans for data analysis of incoming experimental data.
- You will coordinate effectively with multiple cross-functional teams including bioinformatics, software engineering, instrument firmware, and computer vision to meet current data analysis needs and anticipate future ones.
- You will mentor bioinformaticists and scientists across a range of experience levels.
- You will effectively communicate complex bioinformatic approaches and concepts to scientists who may not have a background in bioinformatics.
- You will develop and apply statistical learning approaches to generate clear visuals and statistics from biologically relevant datasets.
- You will participate in code and design reviews alongside your bioinformatics colleagues.
Requirements
- A minimum of PhD in Bioinformatics, Data Science, or related field and 5+ years of experience developing novel computational approaches in genomics, transcriptomics, or proteomics
- You must have familiarity with core concepts of molecular biology and/or proteomics
- You must have the proven ability to guide experimental design
- You must have expertise in data quality assessment and visualization
- You must have expertise in computational modeling and statistics
- You must have experience with programming in Python or R
- You must have the ability to follow direction as well as work independently
- You must have excellent written and oral communication skills
- You must have a willingness to learn and grow within a transformative company
- You also have proven problem-solving skills and collaborative, teamwork-oriented nature
- You also have a willingness to wear multiple hats and help out colleagues whenever necessary
- Optional experience in programming in C++ or any other strongly-typed language a plus
- Optional experience with use of various integration, functional, and/or unit test frameworks to prove correctness of automated data analysis algorithms & pipelines
- Describe an experience you had with building a novel bioinformatics tool or optimization of a tool.
- When analyzing your data give an example where you had to determine whether an effect observed was real or arose at random.
