What You’ll Do

The SBA Credit Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, underwriting, and recommending approval or denial of Small Business Administration (SBA) and commercial loan requests in accordance with SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), credit union policies, and applicable banking regulations. This role analyzes borrower financial information, assesses credit risk, prepares credit packages, and collaborates with Relationship Managers and credit approvers to support sound lending decisions that align with the credit union’s risk tolerance and mission of serving members.

Core Contributions

  • Credit Analysis & Underwriting
    • Underwrite SBA-guaranteed loan products, primarily 7(a), Express, and 504 loans, ensuring adherence to SBA SOP guidelines, credit union policies, and regulatory requirements.
    • Analyze commercial loan requests including small business, commercial real estate, and business banking transactions.
    • Spread and analyze borrower and guarantor financial statements, tax returns, and projections to evaluate repayment capacity and financial performance.
    • Perform detailed cash flow analysis, including global cash flow where applicable, to determine the borrower’s ability to service debt.
    • Evaluate collateral and supporting documentation including appraisals, environmental reports, business valuations, and audits.
    • Identify credit strengths, weaknesses, risks, and mitigating factors associated with each transaction.
  • Credit Package Preparation
    • Compile and prepare comprehensive credit memorandums and loan approval packages.
    • Summarize financial analysis, risk assessments, and recommended credit structures for review by credit approvers or loan committees.
    • Provide clear, well-documented recommendations regarding loan approval, denial, or modification.
  • Loan Structuring & Collaboration
    • Work closely with Relationship Managers to structure loans that appropriately balance member needs with credit risk management.
    • Provide guidance on loan structuring components such as:
      • Amortization and maturity terms.
      • Fixed vs. variable interest rates.
      • Prepayment provisions.
      • Collateral requirements and guarantor support.
    • Recommend policy exceptions when appropriate and supported by credit analysis.
  • Risk Management & Compliance
    • Ensure all credit analysis and underwriting practices comply with SBA SOP guidelines, credit union lending policies, and regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain thorough documentation to support credit decisions and ensure audit and regulatory compliance.
    • Monitor risk trends and escalate concerns when appropriate.
  • Member & Internal Support
    • Respond to inquiries from internal partners and external members regarding underwriting requirements or credit decisions.
    • Collaborate with lending, credit administration, and operations teams to ensure efficient loan processing and closing.

Assets You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • 8+ years’ experience underwriting small business, commercial loans, or related area.
  • Strong knowledge of SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and commercial lending practices. Strong understanding of commercial loan structuring and credit risk management.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written credit analyses and recommendations.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills for interaction with lending teams and credit committees.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple underwriting requests and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).

The expected salary for this position is $117,456.00 to $146,819.00 annually.
