Position Summary

Lead the vision, design, development, and support of the Research data ecosystem for all of Research globally.

Modern research is heavily computational, and this runs on Data (and compute, but data is the point for this role). We at BMS (Bristol Myers Squibb) are leaning in on the use of Machine Learning to accelerate our ability to deliver lifesaving medications to patients. Within the Research community this directly impacts several key capabilities including understanding the biological mechanism of a disease, designing, and optimizing molecules. Driving all of these requires us to better understand the data we have, make it more accessible, and proactively generate or incorporate data where we have gaps.

This new role will be at the forefront of this work. In this role you will interact directly with our world-class Research team to understand needs, build tools, expand our thinking, engage with the broader ecosystem, and to be a thought leader in this space. You will also lead a large team of highly skilled, passionate technologists to deliver your vision for our partners and patients. This role will work closely with our Applications and Compute teams as a single capability delivering every day. You will be a member of the Research IT Leadership team setting our direction and building a culture of success for hundreds of colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build a team of 75+ BMS colleagues / $50M+ responsible for Research data strategy, delivery, and governance

  • Develop several high performing product teams with leading talent through development and recruiting

  • Engage deeply with emerging trends and techniques in research data management, privacy, regulations, and usage patterns

  • Provide transparency into the health of our data landscape to drive and support rapidly growing demand for data driven research as reflected in annual Research goals

  • Bring vision and technology leadership to the Research data platform and all related processes (budget, governance, lifecycle management, etc.) Build agile teams and processes to ensure timely delivery of capabilities in line with Research goals

  • Partner closely with Research Applications, Compute, and Emerging Technology teams to deliver services

  • Serve as advisor to the SVP Research IT on matters of strategy and team dynamics

  • Establish effective working relationships with Research leadership and with extended IT leadership teams

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience building new teams in rapidly changing spaces

  • Ability to articulate a vision and excite others to contribute

  • Experience working at scale and speed

  • Solid grounding in technical discipline and experience navigating technology shifts

  • Natural sense of business motivations, ability to see opportunity, assess risk, and say No when needed

  • Deep understanding of the value of interpersonal connections and how to lead large scale change

  • Familiarity with regulated environments (Pharma is not a requirement)

  • Driven by curiosity and a desire to understand from first principles

  • An undergraduate degree in life sciences or technology is required and advanced study in related field or an MBA is optional but desirable

If you come across a role that intrigues you but doesn’t perfectly line up with your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway. You could be one step away from work that will transform your life and career.
