Position Details

Information Technology and Security at The University of Tampa has a position for a Senior Systems Administrator to join our team. Primary duties will include ensuring the stability, integrity, and efficiency of systems that support core organizational functions and handling various ongoing operational responsibilities in a team environment. The ability to solve problems, evaluate, assess, and/or improve server systems requires excellent communication, interpersonal, project management, and governance skills.


The Senior Systems Administrator reports to the Director, IT Operations. This position is designated as an essential employee and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather or other conditions. 


Duties and Responsibilities
•    Maintaining the stability, integrity, and optimal performance of enterprise systems that support core university functions
•    Ensuring server systems and applications are available, reliable, and aligned with service level expectations and the University's needs
•    Conducting comprehensive system performance evaluations and recommending enhancements or new solutions to improve functionality and efficiency
•    Identifying and coordinating the server infrastructure installation, configuration, upgrade, and ongoing maintenance
•    Demonstrating agility in adapting to evolving priorities, technical challenges, and organizational demands
•    Responding promptly to service desk escalations, ensuring clear communication, and providing timely updates to campus users
•    Maintaining accurate and current documentation of systems, configurations, and inventories
•    Engaging with campus stakeholders to assess requirements, propose solutions, and define project timelines for system implementations
•    Collaborating cross-functionally to ensure the successful delivery of ITS projects, fostering teamwork and accountability
•    Installing, configuring, and maintaining server operating systems, including various Linux distros and Microsoft Windows Server platforms
•    Supporting the development and execution of disaster recovery, business continuity, and system resiliency plans
•    Assisting in aligning systems administration practices with ISO 27001 (Information Security Management Systems) and ISO 22301 (Business Continuity Management Systems) standards to ensure data security and compliance
•    Maintaining high availability and robust performance of mission-critical server infrastructure
•    Monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing server hardware, operating systems, and core services to sustain performance and reliability
•    Safeguarding data integrity and availability through consistent backup strategies and proactive assessments
•    Acting as a liaison with software and hardware vendors to facilitate timely and effective issue resolution
•    Designing and implementing system deployment plans, automation scripts, and testing protocols to ensure stable operations
•    Participating in planning and executing system upgrades and migrations, minimizing disruption, and ensuring continuity of services
•    Enforcing and validating system security protocols to uphold data confidentiality, integrity, and availability
•    Supporting and administering cloud-based platforms like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS)
•    Managing and renewing support agreements for server hardware and associated software with relevant vendors
•    Working collaboratively and professionally with other teams across Information Technology and Security, including Network and Information Security, to support projects or resolve complex issues
•    Partnering effectively with academic and administrative departments to ensure ITS solutions align with university standards and compliance requirements
•    Leading and/or contributing to project planning efforts, setting clear timelines and deliverables to maximize efficiency and minimize service disruption
•    Applying best practices to ensure continuous system availability, robust disaster recovery capabilities, and comprehensive documentation
•    Providing advance notification and clear communication for scheduled outages, operating within established change management frameworks
•    Adhering to IT and information security policies, maintaining compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines
