Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as a Steamfitter to work at Pontiac Correctional Center. The ideal candidate is a team player, self-motivated, task oriented, has excellent communication skills and shows great attention to detail. This position performs skilled tasks as the journeyman level in installing, repairing, operating, altering, and maintaining air handling and heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC) equipment. Duties also include cleaning and replacing defective pipe and fittings, preparing reports of materials and supplies used and keeping inventory of materials and supplies on hand. Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs skilled tasks at the journeyman level.
  2. Cleans and replaces defective pipe and fittings.
  3. Prepares reports and keeps records of material and supplies used.
  4. Keeps an inventory of materials and supplies on hand.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires no formal education.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining air handling equipment, including refrigeration equipment, ice machines, etc.
  2. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience working with steamfitter tools, materials, methods, and practices.
  3. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, simple drawings, or sketches
  4. Prefers certification in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).
  5. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience keeping records/logbook of materials and supplies used, work orders completed, and inventory of materials and supplies on hand.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  2. Requires ability to pass a drug screen.  The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
