Ball Memorial’s Cardiac Progressive Care an 18-bed unit that specializes in cardiac patient population; HF; pre & post cardiac catheterization patients; pre & post CV surgery patients; arrhythmias; cardiac drips. On the Cardiac Progressive Care Unit, we use a multidisciplinary team approach consisting of nurses, physicians, patient care assistants, case managers, and secretarial support staff. We pride ourselves on our strong partnership and high-quality care we deliver to our patients.

Nursing skills gained on this unit:

  • Care of chest tubes and art lines.
  • Managing and titrating drips.
  • Management of drains, tubes, lines (ostomies, feeding tubes, central lines, etc.)
  • Surgical site care (sutures, staples, dressing changes)
  • Trach care 

Unit Successes/Designations:

  • We have a UBC that meets monthly to discuss unit needs, concerns, and areas of opportunity.
  •  We have multiple nurses who are professionally engaged through nurse lead councils and certification. 
  •  Our highest scoring areas in our Team Member Engagement Survey were “I know what is expected of me at work” and “I have a best friend at work.”
  • 3 “Good Catch” award winners in 2023.
  • Multiple Daisy award nominees in 2023. 

Unit Culture:

  • We work to create a healthy work environment through accountability, engagement, and collaboration.
  •  We encourage growth and development through certification, joining councils, etc.
  • 6-8 weeks of orientation with a preceptor and classes. (cardiac dynamics, critical care basics, sheath class)

Qualifications 

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
