Lab Manager Senior

Overview

Under the direction of the Director of the Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC), the Lab Manager Senior oversees the daily operations, management, and staffing of the LARC. They will ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the LARC and the safe use and maintenance of equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Hire, train and supervise animal care and office staff (non-exempt employees) to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, University and facility policies and with AAALAC guidelines.
• Monitor leave, p-card use and other personnel actions in accordance with USU policies, develop and maintain personnel descriptions, evaluate and recruit LARC personnel, and identify and implement employee development needs.
• Provide leadership in the preparation and communication to LARC users of information related to LARC activities and issues as necessary or as needed by university administration
• Maintain an Occupation Safety and Health Program within the LARC in coordination with USU’s EHS Office.
• Coordinate daily activities within laboratory animal facilities.
• Ensure regular maintenance and repair of vivarium capital equipment, including HVAC, cage wash, autoclaves, tissue digester, etc.
• Be on call to respond to physical facility issues outside of normal work hours.
• Advise animal care staff, primary investigators and research staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, university and facility policies and with AAALAC guidelines.
• Participate in inspections of USU Laboratory animal facilities with the IACUC.
• Participate in site inspections by USDA/AHPIS representatives.
• Converse and correspond with Director, administrators, university faculty, facility users, and the public concerning facility and laboratory animal issues.
• Provide leadership to ensure timely response to LARC user needs.
• As needed assist in training of PI’s and research staff on basic animal care, use procedures and standards
• Act as a liaison between campus planning, campus physical facilities, and construction workers during facility renovation, construction, or repairs. Review blueprints as needed.
• Assist in development of Standard Operating Procedures for campus laboratory animal facilities.
• Under the direction of the Director implement a Post-Approval Monitoring program within the LARC facilities.
• Other duties as assigned by the LARC Director.
• Support the Research Office in the development of the LARC budget. This includes collecting and providing data for the determination of appropriate user fees.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BS Degree in an animal or medical related field of life science.
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• 4 years in laboratory animal science, veterinary medicine, or other related animal field.
• Possess or achieve Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification from AALAS within 3 years.
• Good oral and written communication skills (in English).
• Possess or be able to acquire federally mandated security and background checks to work with Select Agents
• Able and willing to attend required personal hygiene and personal safety training on an annual basis for certification
• Able and willing to work with hazardous / toxic, radioactive and all bio hazardous agents after attending appropriate training on an annual basis for certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Masters (M.S.) degree in related life sciences
• Previous supervisory experience
• Able to acquire certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) with AALAS.
• Previous experience in hiring and/or training employees
• Previous experience working with infectious agents in a laboratory animal environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory requirements associated with laboratory animal based research

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT IN AN ANIMAL RESEARCH FACILITY:

• Able to handle a variety of animals humanely and properly with training.
• Aptitude for orderliness and cleanliness.
• Able to work with a variety of soaps, detergents and disinfectants after appropriate training.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment while performing some duties as required.
• Able to work normal schedule – Monday through Friday – 8:00-12:00 and 1:00-5:00.
• Willing to work weekends and holidays if needed.
• Must be dependable and reliable.
• Must work well with co-workers, laboratory technicians and supervisor, and facility users.
• Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
• No known animal related allergies.
