Deputy Director for Electricity

Third Way is looking for a Deputy Director for Electricity to lead the design and execution of education and policy advocacy strategies that modernize the electric grid to make it more affordable, reliable, and clean for America’s economic growth and competitiveness. This includes accelerating the deployment of clean energy generation and transmission projects by addressing systemic barriers such as permitting, siting, and interconnection.

The Deputy Director for Electricity will…

• Identify and advance strategies for Third Way to promote policies that modernize the U.S. power grid and accelerate the deployment of clean energy projects;

• Communicate about complex electricity grid issues in ways that policymakers can use and will resonate with the general public;

• Educate decisionmakers on barriers such as permitting, siting, and interconnection that slow the pace of clean energy deployment, and build urgency around the need for impactful policy solutions;

• Build and sustain trusted relationships with key partners and allies, which could include transmission operators, utilities, permitting agencies, state energy offices, federal agencies, industry associations, labor unions, and NGOs;

• Supervise junior policy staff and consultants as needed;

• Engage with Congress, federal agencies, state officials, and industry stakeholders to advocate for pragmatic, durable policy solutions on grid and deployment issues;

• Convene roundtables, workshops, and other forums to bring together stakeholders with diverse perspectives to find common ground;

• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments at the federal and state level to provide timely analysis and recommendations to senior leadership and external partners;

• Partner with Third Way development staff to engage funders and ensuring effective management of relevant grant budgets;

• Conduct research and produce reports, briefs, and events that clearly articulate the economic, reliability, and security benefits of grid modernization and faster clean energy deployment;

• Work with communications and political experts to craft compelling messages and policy agendas that resonate with working families and other key audiences.

  Salary Range: $90,000 - $130,000, annually

This might be the job for you, if you have:

• A minimum of seven years of experience working in energy policy, infrastructure deployment, or a closely related field;

• A strong understanding of federal and state policies related to power grid modernization, permitting, siting, and clean energy deployment;

• Familiarity with federal and state permitting processes and interconnection challenges;

• Knowledge of power system planning, transmission development, and grid operations;

• Experience engaging in effective policy advocacy with Congress, federal agencies, and/or state regulatory bodies;

• Strong relationship management skills, with a demonstrated ability to bring together stakeholders who may have conflicting priorities;

• Demonstrated ability to clearly and persuasively explain complex policy and technical issues to non-expert audiences.
