About the role

Perform analytical and experimental work to determine structural performance of components and systems in order to provide improvement recommendations. Utilize extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles to determine the validity of the design to meet user requirements and provide design recommendation as needed. Obtain input and negotiate with Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials and Product Validation and deliver key structural performance parameters like motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, and sound power to Design and Product Validation. Make technical decisions in the area of structural design, such as materials and their processing as well as geometry, that impact structural performance of mechanical components and systems. Apply computer modeling processes including Matlab, Excel or Visual Basic, Windows operating systems and high performance computing hardware systems for complex technical problem solving and decision making. Utilize mechanical engineering tools and methods including nCode Glyphworks, Simcenter Testlab, HEADAcoutics Artemis, Minitab, Seven Basic Tool+, 8D of Problem Solving and Six Sigma to provide guidance for processes that enable high quality decision making and predict the component’s deformation, stresses, fatigue life and other factors. Impact product design decisions utilizing Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis to predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system and / or component level requirements. Apply Principles of Fatigue and Durability to determine life of mechanical components and systems via numerical modeling and physical measurements and evaluates component temperatures, natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, strains/stresses, wear and fatigue life to draw conclusions that influence design decisions. Utilize the Principles of Noise and Acoustics and the Principles of Dynamics and Vibration to evaluate both air and structure borne noise, sound power levels, sound quality, rigid and flexible body motion, velocities, accelerations, friction, and wear. Impact mechanical product design decisions to best meet stakeholder’s requirements through the utilization and interpretation of numerical tools and methods that predict the performance of a mechanical component or system. Solve complex product problems using a process that protects the user, determines the assignable cause, implements data-based solutions, identifies systemic root causes, and recommends actions to prevent problem reoccurrence. Identify representation of a system or system element by using suitable analytical tools and techniques including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in order to derive knowledge about the real system. Manage individual part life cycle including design, procurement, validation, production and retirement.

Positions require a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 4 years of experience as an Applied Mechanics, Mechanical, Test or Systems Engineer, or related position. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 6 years of experience as an Applied Mechanics, Mechanical, Test or Systems Engineer, or related position. Experience to include: Computer modeling processes including Matlab, Excel or Visual Basic, Windows operating systems and high performance computing hardware systems; Mechanical engineering tools and methods including nCode Glyphworks, Simcenter Testlab, HEADAcoutics Artemis, Minitab, Seven Basic Tool+, 8D of Problem Solving and Six Sigma; Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis; Principles of Fatigue and Durability; Principles of Noise and Acoustics; Principles of Dynamics and Vibration; Product problem solving; Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T); Part Life cycle management.
