Position Specific Summary

The Construction Inspector position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility, reviews approved technical public works construction plans and conducts on-site observations of construction projects and related components of other general construction projects to ensure that work is done in compliance with specifications within the Engineering Division.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Construction Inspection Supervisor. This position does not lead or supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drives city vehicles to various locations for all phases of inspection. Reviews approved construction plans, specifications, and special provisions to ensure compliance. Inspects earthwork operations including clearing of construction site, roadway, drainage, and structural excavations, backfill operations and embankment fills or trenches, bedding, shading, backfill and other elements of construction for compliance with city specifications and standards. Inspects construction of concrete structures such as bridges, overpass and box culverts for placement of concrete, rebar and for general compliance with city specifications.

  • Coordinates with contractors, engineers, utilities, and various departmental sections that may conduct construction projects in order to meet requirements and provisions set forth in the construction plans. Ensures traffic control and work-site safety measures are taken by collaborating with stakeholders throughout the life cycle of construction. Schedules daily site checks to review and monitor construction progress. Assists in resolution on issues with site foreman over identified non-compliance issues by providing options for resolution. Responds to citizen complaints such as roadway projects and any request for information. Provides information to contractors, utilities, and other customers regarding specifications, plans, regulatory requirements, and City of Tucson Codes. Provides non-compliant updates to lead or supervisor as needed.

  • Attends and conducts pre-construction meetings with site foreman to review requirements and provisions set forth in the construction plans to document information real-time. Maintains logbook of daily records, written reports and documentation of contractor’s work performed. Logs historical research to determine the age of projects and permitted work to aid in investigations and to help with coordination efforts. Maintains records of inspection activities and ensures complete documentation of projects by inspection staff.

  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

6 months post high school

Work Experience:

Four (4) years of directly related experience

License:

Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

6 months post high school

Work Experience:

Prior work experience in-Construction Management, Plan Review

License/Certifications:
