A Day in the Life

The Instruments Center of Excellence in Surgical R&D is committed to transforming surgical and diagnostic procedures and outcomes. We are looking for someone to join a driven, passionate team in providing solutions that aid in the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, which has the highest mortality across all cancers.



Day in the Life:

Own design elements of integration of visual or sensing technologies into a catheter for lung biopsy.

Contribute to mechanical design activities for prototype builds.

Execute early prototype builds for feasibility analysis prior to scaling.

Assist in test method development for design verification.



To be successful in this role, the candidate should exhibit the following:

Experienced with traditional composite catheter constructions and reinforcement members including braiding, coiling, and laser cut structures.

Familiar with thermal reflow lining and jacketing processes.

Demonstrated ability to work independently with moderate guidance and consultation.

Ability to rapidly conceptualize a catheter construction, build a prototype using on-hand and procured materials and evaluate prototype performance.

Ability to create benchtop models mimicking tissue and clinical use conditions.

3D modeling capability with an engineering CAD design package.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Researches, plans, designs, verifies, validates and develops mechanical and/or electromechanical products and systems, such as metals, instruments, controls, plastics, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, resonance, hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
  • Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
  • May be responsible for the transfer from R&D to manufacturing.

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM: An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires practical knowledge and demonstrated competence within job area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.
Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)( 4)(iii)(A) and minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience.
