A Day in the Life

This role is within Medtronic’s Peripheral Vascular Health (PVH) operating unit Research and Development (R&D) team. PVH is dedicated to the treatment of peripheral arterial and venous diseases. We offer our physician customers a comprehensive suite of products and therapies to treat varying degrees of vascular disease — disorders of the circulatory system outside of the brain and heart. Our goal is to help healthcare professionals save limbs, reduce pain, and treat disease — so their patients can get back to enjoying what they love.

The PVH R&D Lab Supervisor leads a team of Design Technicians supporting R&D testing across multiple programs and stages of the medical device lifecycle, from early development through commercial product support. This role provides tactical and technical supervision while also performing hands-on tasks such as planning, testing, and troubleshooting. The supervisor expects to manage a team of six or more Design Technicians, prioritizes multiple concurrent requests in an ambiguous environment, and ensures effective support for New Product Development (NPD), Released Product Management (RPM), and Research and Technology (R&T) teams. The role is accountable for mentoring, developing, and coaching staff, setting clear performance goals, conducting performance reviews and regular 1:1s, and driving department-level initiatives and objectives.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Direct and coordinate the laboratory support staff and maintain an adequate inventory of research products, materials, and laboratory equipment
  • Coordinate daily consumable supply stocking and ordering
  • Ensure effective operation of all laboratory equipment and serve as point of contact for instrument repairs
  • May organize and participate in vendor negotiations, product and software evaluations, tutorials, and facility modifications
  • Interface with Employee Health and Safety (EH&S) and act as a liaison between departments and the scientific staff to complete lab modifications and ensure safety compliance
  • Provide technical input to purchasing and other functional areas
  • Responsible for development of tracking procedures, establishment and maintenance of service contracts and warranties with vendors
  • May trouble shoot and repair general instrumentation
  • Train new scientific staff in the general use and function of designated instrumentation and creates and refines user protocols for general use
  • Make adjustments or recommend enhancements in systems and day-to-day department processes with in the lab
  • Share and exchange relevant information to reach solutions; present information and exchanging information.
  • Participate in test method development, verification and validation as required
  • Work effectively with internal cross-functional team members
  • Comply with applicable FDA and international regulatory laws and standards
  • Support internal and external audits.

Nice to Have - Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in R&D or operations within the medical device or pharmaceutical industry
  • 2+ years experience as a Lab Supervisor or Team Lead in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience using common electronic documentation systems (e.g., MAP, Agile, or equivalent)

Must Have – Required Qualifications

  • Requires a Baccalaureate degree AND minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
