Job Description
General Responsibilities:
The Director of Underwriting is a critical leadership position on our management team responsible for overseeing the underwriting processes within Longbridge Financial (“LBF”). This vital role involves developing and implementing strategies to enhance and improve our underwriting processes, managing risk to our tolerance level, and helping to ensure the department and its practices are compliant with applicable rules and regulations. The Director also leads and manages our underwriting team, and works to foster strong relationships with other LBF departments.
Primary Job Duties:
- Responsible for developing tools and techniques, conducting analyses of business data and trends, reporting on and monitoring key underwriting performance metrics, and the communication of these results to your management team and or Sr. Management.
- Engage on strategic initiatives to ensure optimal underwriting outcomes, including the identification of opportunities and recommendations to improve underwriting results.
- Develop process steps, job aids, training materials and underwriting conditions in support of underwriting objectives.
- Effectively communicate risk, issues and escalate appropriately.
- Monitor results of internal/external audits
- Develop staffing & capacity model to ensure appropriate staffing to reach defined goals.
- Responsible for creating an environment, processes and procedures that are compliant with HUD and investor requirements as well as all laws and regulations with a focus on fair and responsible lending.
- Lead a team of Underwriting Managers and 20-40 Underwriters
- Further develop Jr. Underwriter training program and maintain a team of 3-5 junior underwriters.
- Work with managers and supervisors on team retention
- Ability to identify and resolve complex underwriting issues.
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience coaching, managing remote employees, hiring, performance management and termination process
Qualifications
Experience and Skills:
- At least 10 years of residential mortgage underwriting experience, with no less than 5 years in leadership position(s)
- Experience building and scaling a team of underwriters and other related professionals
- Extensive knowledge of HECM Reverse, and Proprietary mortgage programs is highly desirable
- Ability to work autonomously
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions on credit exceptions
- Excellent organizational
