Position Summary
The Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing exceptional nursing care and technical support to patients within the Internal Medicine service. This position works collaboratively with veterinarians and other departments to deliver compassionate, high-quality specialty care while supporting diagnostic procedures, anesthesia, client communication, and patient treatment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Patient Care
● Provide exceptional nursing care to hospitalized patients.
● Obtain complete patient histories and maintain accurate medical records in ezyVet/Smartflow.
● Perform comprehensive patient assessments and promptly communicate changes in patient condition to the attending veterinarian.
● Monitor hospitalized patients and accurately document patient progress throughout hospitalization.
● Administer medications, treatments, fluid therapy, CRIs (Continuous Rate Infusions), oxygen therapy, and blood products as prescribed.
● Place, maintain, and troubleshoot intravenous catheters, urinary catheters, feeding tubes, central lines, and other specialized patient support devices.
● Provide nutritional support, including syringe feeding and feeding tube management.
● Utilize Fear Free handling techniques whenever appropriate to minimize patient stress while maintaining patient and staff safety.
Diagnostic & Laboratory Procedures
● Perform venipuncture and collect blood, urine, fecal, cytology, endocrine, infectious disease, and other diagnostic samples.
● Perform in-house laboratory testing while ensuring proper sample handling, storage, and quality control procedures.
● Prepare and submit samples to outside reference laboratories.
● Perform diagnostic imaging as directed.
● Perform ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, serial laboratory evaluations, and other patient monitoring procedures.
● Assist with advanced diagnostic procedures including bone marrow aspirates, liver aspirates, lymph node aspirates, abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, and other minimally invasive procedures as directed.
Anesthesia & Specialty Procedures
● Prepare patients for ultrasound, advanced imaging, endoscopy, anesthesia, and other specialty procedures.
● Induce, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia while monitoring ECG, blood pressure, SpO₂, ETCO₂, temperature, pulse, and respiration.
● Assist with upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, cystoscopy, foreign body retrieval, and other Internal Medicine procedures.
● Prepare, clean, disinfect, test, and maintain endoscopy equipment and specialty instrumentation according to hospital protocols.
● Maintain procedure logs and ensure specialty equipment remains clean and operational.
Pharmacy & Medication Management
● Calculate medication dosages and prepare medications as prescribed.
● Maintain controlled substance documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
● Maintain pharmacy inventory by stocking, rotating, and monitoring medication expiration dates.
Client Communication
