Job Description Summary

The University Paralegal provides essential legal support to the Office of General Counsel by assisting attorneys with a wide range of legal matters. This position requires a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with strong research, writing, and communication skills. The Paralegal will work on diverse legal issues affecting the University, including but not limited to contract review, litigation support, policy development, and regulatory compliance.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

Legal Research and Analysis: 

  • Conduct legal research using online databases, legal libraries, and other resources.
  • Analyze legal documents and summarize findings for attorneys.
  • Monitor and track changes in laws and regulations that affect the University

Litigation Support: 

  • Assist attorneys with litigation matters, including discovery and document preparation.
  • Organize and maintain litigation files and databases.

Policy and Compliance: 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of University policies and procedures.
  • Research and analyze regulatory requirements and assist with compliance efforts.
  • Maintain records related to compliance activities.

Administrative Support: 

  • Manage and organize legal files and documents.
  • Respond to inquiries from faculty, staff, and students.

Other Duties: 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel or attorneys.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or a related field.

  •  Two years of experience as a paralegal, preferably in a higher education, government, or legal setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and research methods.

  • Proficiency in legal research databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).      

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred. 

  • Experience in higher education law.

  • Experience with document management software.

  • Experience with public records requests.
