Job Summary
The Lead Bus Mechanic assists the Foreman in supervising and assuring timely and quality work is performed by bus shop employees. The position also assists in ensuring safe working conditions and procedures. The position is responsible for monitoring the adequacy of parts and equipment inventory. The bus mechanic lead must be able to supervise and give directions to the employees assigned and participate in the work to be performed. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.
Essential Functions
- Oversee work of mechanics, body techs, hourly/seasonal and apprentices in all aspects of work
- Manages inventory, orders parts and supplies to ensure essential items are available
- Ensures all repairs/work meet safety and quality standards before a vehicle is returned to service
- Schedules and assigns work effectively and efficiently
- Requires some communication with department employees outside of work hours
- Understand and follow state procurement and district accounting procedures when making purchases with any form of payment (Pcard, PO, Pay Voucher)(new verbiage for this position from mechanic description)
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills
- Prioritize and assign work according to importance
Non-Essential Functions

Required Knowledge and Skills
- Proficiency in using various mechanical and power tools, machine tools, measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, ohmmeters), oscilloscopes, cutting and welding equipment, brake lathes, valve grinders, and maintenance tools.
- Ability to understand and operate from schematics and flow charts.
- Strong skills in verbal and written communication, mathematics, and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in using computers and general office equipment, maintaining inventory records, state inspection records, IM records, and communicating with the Utah State Highway Patrol and the Salt Lake County Health Department.
- Ability to motivate and encourage subordinates to create a positive and productive work environment.
- Knowledge of current and upcoming developments in the field through continuing education, manufacturing seminars, and other resources.
- Ability to effectively supervise tasks that are sometimes complex and require analytical thinking and problem solving.
Required Education and Qualifications
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires a current, valid class B, or higher, commercial driver's license with school bus and passenger endorsement - or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Requires two years of formal training in aspects of heavy duty diesel mechanics.
- Requires a current Utah Highway Patrol Safety Inspection Certificate or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Requires a current Salt Lake County Vehicle Emissions Certificate or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Required Prior Experience
- Requires a minimum of one (1) year of journeyman bus mechanic experience in a related field.
