MUSC is a quaternary care hospital known for its active transplantation programs and the NIH designated Hollings Cancer Center, molecular diagnostics, and cell therapy services. About the MUSC Histocompatibility Laboratory

The MUSC Histocompatibility Laboratory is nationally recognized and ASHI-accredited, providing services for one of the largest solid organ transplant programs in the country. It supports both the solid organ and hematopoietic cell transplantation programs. The MUSC Transplant Center is the largest comprehensive transplant center in South Carolina, serving both adults and children. The laboratory offers a complete range of histocompatibility procedures to support MUSC solid organs transplant programs, NIH designated Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) stem cells transplant program, and the Sharing Hope SC Organ Procurement Organization

We Are Seeking:

  • Candidates: An academically oriented MD, MD/PhD, or PhD with 2-10 years of HLA laboratory experience, eligible for HLA Laboratory Director Certification from the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI), or currently in an HLA Director-in-Training program. MD candidates must also be certified by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) in CP or AP/CP.
  • Training: Relevant HLA laboratory pathology specialty training under a Certified Director.
  • Licensure: Eligibility for medical licensure in South Carolina, if applicable.
  • Experience: At least 2 years in histocompatibility testing, transplant immunology, and immunogenetics.
  • Skills: Ability to provide clinical laboratory support for solid organ and stem cell transplantation recipients and donors, and proficiency in assisting with reviewing and approving all types of histocompatibility and diagnostic testing.
  • Responsibilities: Sharing on-call duties, consulting for Virtual Crossmatching, technical and interpretation queries, assisting the Laboratory Director with management tasks, and proficiency in interpreting results for clinical work-up of transplantation cases.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced practical and diagnostic skills in next-generation sequencing, operating and maintaining state-of-the-art molecular pathology equipment, and performing quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Development: Knowledge and experience in new HLA genomic, genetic, immunologic risk assessment, test development, validation, and implementation.
  • Collaboration: Fostering relationships with clinicians and researchers, serving as a resource to technologists, participating in clinical and/or translational research, and actively teaching training pathology residents and fellows.
