Part-time Instructor: Computer Science

 

Job Description:

Part-time instructor positions (as defined by State Board Policy, BP 3-10) exist to create and maintain a teaching and learning environment that empowers students to be successful. Part-time instructors work under the direction of their respective Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Executive Dean. 

Pikes Peak State College maintains a pool of qualified part-time instructors. Part-time instructors will be selected to support departmental requirements. Part-time instructors may be employed to teach courses, conduct presentations or other service activities when current instructors and faculty are not available.

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.  All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or programming related field from a regionally accredited institution OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in programming.
• Documented experience programming in low-level and/or high-level languages, such as C, C++, C#, VB.NET, Java, Python or Assembly.
• Three years of industry experience in programming, information technology or systems analysis and design.
• Teaching or training experience.
• Experience with various operating systems (Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc.).
• Experience with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to demonstrate or articulate a commitment to serving underrepresented populations or populations affected by societal inequities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Documented experience working with diverse learning populations.
• Advance experience with Python programming.
• Documented experience with database systems and SQL, such as Oracle, PL/SQL, MySQL, MS SQL or Access.
• Documented experience using Learning Management Systems, such as Blackboard, Campus, Desire-2-Learn or Moodle.
• Documented experience in Web development software, such as HTML5, CSS, PHP, Javascript, Node.js, JSP, NetBeans or ASP.
• Experience with secure programming software development.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Meeting all scheduled classes/labs/clinics and providing instruction in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the college and the Department Chair’s approved course outline.
2. Using teaching methods and media designed to reach students of varying educational and experiential backgrounds to allow each student the opportunity to master the objectives of the course.
3. Informing students of course requirements through a course syllabus, including: specific objectives, means of attaining objectives, and methods of instruction and grading.
4. Evaluating students on a continuing basis to allow them to be aware of their own progress.
5. Participate in department and/or college level assessment of student learning outcomes in general education and career/technical courses and programs as required.
6. Recommending instructional materials, textbooks, appropriate instructional equipment, and the Library supportive reference materials.
7. Maintaining and submitting records as required by policy and procedures.
8. Promoting affirmative action equal opportunity concepts within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
9. Maintaining required credentials, licenses, certification as appropriate, and proficiency and up-to-date knowledge in the subject matter area.
10. Demonstrates a commitment to teaching.
11. Uses appropriate and various teaching strategies.
12. Uses flexible approaches in teaching for learning.
13. Acknowledges differences in learning styles and motivation.
14. Encourages students to achieve goals.
15. Relates coursework to real life experiences.
16. Maintains a positive and empathetic attitude towards students.
