The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking two skilled and motivated Highway Maintenance Workers to join our team in Electric City, WA! As a journey-level member of our regional maintenance team, you'll help keep Washington's highways safe, reliable, and open by performing a variety of highway and roadway maintenance activities that support the movement of people and commerce.


Working under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you'll operate a wide range of maintenance equipment and tools to inspect, maintain, and repair highways and highway infrastructure. You'll contribute to everything from routine roadway maintenance to emergency response efforts, ensuring transportation systems remain safe and functional in all conditions. This role also offers opportunities to demonstrate leadership by guiding maintenance crews in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, making it an excellent position for someone who enjoys teamwork, problem-solving, and taking initiative.


What to Expect

Work is generally performed Monday–Thursday on four 10-hour shifts; however, weekends, holidays, night work, and extended hours may be required for emergency response and non-scheduled callouts. The position requires the ability to report to the duty station within 45 minutes, respond in all weather conditions, and participate in rotational night, standby, and call-back assignments.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations. 
  • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Remove deceased animals and debris from roadways. 
  • Track, document, and report daily work activities. 
  • Account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Perform snow and ice control; load trucks from stockpiles or pits;
  • Haul materials such as sand, gravel and other items. 
  • Maintain stockpile sites.
  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations; as well as full road or bridge closures.
  • Perform traffic control.

Qualifications
