Architectural, structural, and building engineers design buildings facilities focusing on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and safety systems. They collaborate with architects to ensure buildings are stable, sustainable, and compliant with codes. Key specialists include structural engineers for stability, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) engineers for building systems.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Maintenance Division Roadside Facilities, located at the Stassney Headquarters, is now accepting applications for Engineering Support Interns. This paid opportunity is ideal for students enrolled in engineering or related science programs who want to apply their skills in real-world settings.
The Roadside Facilities group have seventy-eight Safety Rest Areas located throughout the state. Among the duties will be to travel around the state to assist and/or perform assessments of the existing facilities, including building and site surveys.
Internships are scheduled to begin in May 2026 and will run through the summer. Positions may also be evaluated for continuation on a year-round basis, offering a valuable pathway to grow your career with TxDOT.
