Part-time Instructor: English

 

Job Description:

Part-time instructor positions (as defined by State Board Policy, BP 3-10) exist to create and maintain a teaching and learning environment that empowers students to be successful. Part-time instructors work under the direction of their respective Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Division Dean. 

Pikes Peak State College maintains a pool of qualified part-time instructors. Part-time instructors will be selected to support departmental requirements. Part-time instructors may be employed to teach courses, conduct presentations or other service activities when current instructors and faculty are not available.

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.  All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric or MFA in Writing OR Master's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Composition, English, Literature or Rhetoric.
• Ability to demonstrate or articulate a commitment to serving underrepresented populations or populations affected by societal inequities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience teaching college composition within the past five years.
• Demonstrated understanding of current theories, methods, and approaches in the teaching of composition.
• Experience in curriculum or course design and development for integrated reading and writing courses.
• Demonstrated success in instructing students in the college level environment who place below college level English.
• Demonstrated success in tutoring students in a laboratory or tutorial setting.
• Bilingual (proficient) in Spanish and English.
• Experience teaching dual enrollment, concurrent enrollment, or high school students.

Salary:

$67.58 per contact hour.  Pikes Peak State College participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA) contribution rates.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Meeting all scheduled classes/labs/clinics and providing instruction in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the college and the Department Chair’s approved course outline.

2. Using teaching methods and media designed to reach students of varying educational and experiential backgrounds to allow each student the opportunity to master the objectives of the course.

3. Informing students of course requirements through a course syllabus, including: specific objectives, means of attaining objectives, and methods of instruction and grading.

4. Evaluating students on a continuing basis to allow them to be aware of their own progress.

5. Participate in department and/or college level assessment of student learning outcomes in general education and career/technical courses and programs as required.

6. Recommending instructional materials, textbooks, appropriate instructional equipment, and the Library supportive reference materials.

7. Maintaining and submitting records as required by policy and procedures.

8. Promoting affirmative action equal opportunity concepts within the scope of assigned responsibilities.

9. Maintaining required credentials, licenses, certification as appropriate, and proficiency and up-to-date knowledge in the subject matter area.

10. Teaching for PPSC might mean teaching in person, at several campuses, at night, on weekends, and in several modalities (online, hyflex, face to face).

2. Demonstrates ability to employ qualitative and quantitative analytical skills in the classroom.
