Job Summary

This Engineering Intern position will support the engineering department in the administration of duties associated with the review, preparation and development of pipeline cost analysis/bid analysis, pipeline schematics, pipeline system review, and pipeline design assistance. 

 

**Please note, this position is working 5 days a week onsite in the office in Middletown, PA.

 

Tasks include but are not limited to:

• Obtain pipeline construction experience by visiting project sites and understanding company policy and procedure
• Determine pipeline replacement sizing using hydraulic modeling software
• Review of as-built drawings to determine project design options
• Identification and design of all service lines and meter sets affected by replacement project
• Development of construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Draft local, state, and federal permits applications
• Development of project estimates using blanket contract pricing and company software
• Input proposed pipeline projects into GIS software
• Review completed project folders for accuracy and completeness
• Review and respond to Pennsylvania Design 1-Call tickets

 

At the completion of this internship, the intern will utilize the skills, knowledge and experience obtained during the internship to design and estimate a smaller scope (<$300K) main replacement project. The intern will have presented this project to management for DOA approval and will have successfully obtained DOA approval for the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Pipeline schematics & Construction Drawings – Develop schematics for pipeline regulator stations, meter sets and other key facilities. Through the use PA One Call Design Tickets and light field survey, develop AutoCAD base plans to be used in pipeline replacement design packages.
• Pipeline design assistance – Assist engineers in performing pipeline projects designs.
• Pipeline system review – Review existing pipeline facilities, gather facility data from historical records and through field reconnaissance, perform pressure design calculations, identify pressure limitations, and analyze alternatives to increasing system capacity.
• Assist in responding to 3rd party PA One Call design ticket requests, by reviewing the subject area in UGI GIS systems, gathering all necessary facility information from GIS systems, and sending a response letter/package by to the requestor.
• Shadow other engineers in attending field site meetings for internal project walkthroughs, 3rd party utility coordination meetings with state, municipal parties, contractors, developers, etc. Shadow other field departments in UGI to expand view of how a natural gas utility business operates (Construction & Maintenance, Meter & Regulation, Utility, Capital Construction, Corrosion Control, etc.).
• Complete all other work assignments and special projects as directed by the Manager Area Engineering/Sr.
