About the role

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Supervisor II/III - Parks, supervise and participate in the work of staff involved in park maintenance and development while communicating any needs and maintenance operations to the Supervisor II/III - Parks.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises direct supervision over assigned park maintenance staff.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Supervise assigned park employees on all park work assignments.
Assist the Supervisor II/III – Parks in the training and evaluating of assigned staff including training employees in the proper and safe operation of all maintenance equipment and tools.
Inspect assigned park areas for present and future improvement and maintenance needs; review with supervisor any improvement on equipment, operations, or working conditions that may be used in the maintenance of the parks.
Oversee and assist with the daily and preventive maintenance of all equipment. Reporting damages, repairs needed or equipment operational issues to the division’s Equipment Mechanic in an appropriate and timely manner.
Complete required daily, weekly, and monthly work reports on Asset Essentials application/program.
Ensure that all assigned personnel comply with City, Department, and safety regulations.
Lead and participate in all maintenance and construction work assignments.
Operate parks maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, trucks, chipper, backhoe, loader and various small types of equipment.
Assist in scheduling park maintenance and construction work in the assigned section.
Apply pesticides properly by following TDA regulations and MSDS recommendations.
OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES
Assist Supervisor II/III – Parks in planning the needs of equipment and supplies for budget purposes.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Park maintenance, including familiarity with park maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies, as well as basic maintenance procedures for that equipment.
Mobile devices and computer data entry for work order systems.
Landscape construction practices, methods, tools, equipment and materials.
Upkeep of turf, trees, shrubs, and other plants.
Safe driving principles and practices.
Skill to:
Operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment, tools, and vehicles including pickup truck, tractor, riding mower, push mower, edger, chain saw, string trimmer, utility lift bucket, brush chipper, and front loader in a safe manner.
Ability to:
Delegate and oversee assignments through completion.
Supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
Enter work related data on Mobile devices and/or computers for work order systems.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience working in a landscape crew environment, preferably in a park maintenance and development setting is preferred.
Education/Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas Class C or higher driver's license with a good driving record or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
A Texas Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Applicators License or the ability obtain one within six (6) months of employment is required.
Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb.
Exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.
Ability to travel to different sites.
