SUMMARY
This position will perform advanced professional work managing an accounting related operation and reviewing and preparing financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for governmental organizations.The selected candidate will work with the Chief and Assistant Chief Accountant, department heads, city staff, and other financial professionals inside the organization. This position reports to the Financial Reporting Accountant III.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the integrity of the City’s financial statements
- Monitor financial transactions and ensure appropriate application of generally accepted accounting principles
- Maintain the City’s capital asset system by ensuring that capital asset acquisitions, transfers, disposals, and retirements are recorded properly and timely
- Review and enter capital assets transactions
- Perform monthly reconciliation of capital assets to the general ledger
- Prepare interim financial statements that include supporting work-papers; prepare other reports as required by federal and state regulations, auditors (internal or external), or other agencies.
- Prepare general journal
- Document and update procedures of the capital assets process
- Assist with implementation of Governmental Accounting Standard Board standards
- Assist in the implementation of the City’s new Workday Enterprise Resource Planning System
- Conduct research and provide information as needed on various projects
- Ensure compliance with other required financial reports
- Participate in other projects as needed or assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Degree in Accounting/Finance or closely related field
- Proficient with personal computers including spreadsheet and database applications
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- In depth knowledge of governmental accounting and sophisticated governmental entities
- Three or more years of relevant government work experience in capital asset

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
