About the role

Milliman is seeking a Business Data Manager to join our Health Research Team (HRT). This position plays a critical role in advancing the data acquisition, financial operations, and healthcare analytics of the HRT.  The successful candidate will partner with other HRT professionals to build and maintain reporting tools (such as dashboards) to track data, using this data to define KPIs, and generate reports, as well as enhancing our financial operations.  In addition, this role will support the Health Discipline in the utilization of Milliman’s data assets, help to define future data enhancements and capabilities and lead our data acquisition.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Health Research Team.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Health Discipline support
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand their requirements and partner with HRT staff to implement and test enhancements.
    • Develop BI reporting to support the Health Discipline understanding and knowledge of our data assets
    • Collaborate with health consultants to identify data enhancements and partner with the HRT staff to implement and test enhancements.
    • Communications from the Health Research Team to the Health discipline (including newsletters, webinars, and SharePoint site)
  • Data Acquisition and Operations
    • Support the Health Discipline’s external data contracts and management.
    • Collaborate with internal consultants and external clients / vendors to expand our health data assets.
    • Continuous improvement/innovation: Develop and implement new methods for increasing the visibility of the team’s health care data assets and financial operation systems and streamlining process flows considering new data and technologies.
  • Financial Operations:
    • Partner with the HRT, Health Research Board, and Global Corporate Services (GCS) Finance teams to enhance our processes, analytics, and automation.
    • Monthly and annual financial operations, including actual vs expected expenses and forecasting, Annual budget projections, and Internal billing and invoicing.
  • Quality Assurance and Data Compliance / Governance
    • Promote compliance with data governance and security requirements.
    • Work collaboratively with stakeholders across the firm, to understand desired use of the organization’s healthcare data assets and ensure use cases are permissible under contractual requirements.

 

To be successful in this role, you will have the following qualifications:

Professional Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science, information systems, finance, business, or similar quantitative field.
  • Seven or more years' experience analyzing and managing large databases of health claim and enrollment data (e.g., administrative / closed claim data)
  • Seven or more years' experience working with Senior leadership in identifying data analytics needed to support the business strategy.
  • Five or more years' experience managing a technical team in translating business needs to data requirements.
  • Proficient at Excel, including complex formulas and VBA automation.
  • Strong programming skills in language such as SQL, Python, R, Spark or Scala. 
  • Experience in BI tool development, such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools.
  • Attention to detail, with a commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
  • Strong business acumen and communication skills, including relating to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely in both written and verbal communications.

 

Personal Qualifications

  • Excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects / stakeholders which includes same-day turnaround for many complex and nuanced requests.
  • Strategic and critical thinking skills, especially when dealing with executive-level stakeholders.

 

Location

This is a remote position. The employee is expected to travel to Chicago approximately once per month for on-site meetings.

 

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $134,000 to $272,000, depending on a combination of factors, including, but not limited to, education, relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, location, etc. Employees are also eligible for a bonus under our standard bonus policy.
