Lecturer of Music-Percussion/Assistant Director of Athletic Bands, Department of Music

Description

The successful candidate will work with the UTC Music Department as the Lecturer of percussion, responsible for all aspects of instruction and maintenance of the percussion studio, working with undergraduate music majors and non-majors. Additionally, the successful candidate will develop and maintain ongoing professional activity as a performer and pedagogue in the percussion area.

The successful candidate will also work collaboratively with the Director of Bands and the Associate Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands in administrating a large comprehensive university program to promote heightened student experiences and recruit for the band program, the music department, and the university. In collaboration with the Director of Athletic Bands, the candidate will instruct and manage the marching band percussion section, participate in the creative design process, contribute to student leadership development, and perform other administrative responsibilities associated with the marching band and their activities.

The successful applicant will teach based on the candidate's qualifications and needs of the band program and music department. All music faculty are expected to engage in departmental and university service and participate in fostering a collegial and professional atmosphere for students, staff, and faculty colleagues.

Job Requirements

• Maintain a comprehensive percussion studio with proportionate duties that include:
• Instruct undergraduate applied percussion lessons.
• Direct multiple percussion ensembles.
• Organize and maintain percussion instruments, and equipment inventory.
• Actively recruit percussion students to the department.
• Understand current trends in the music industry and in music technology.
• Demonstrates continuing growth in the percussive arts, including researching modern techniques in orchestral percussion, contemporary percussion, and drum set.
• Create and implement a curriculum for music education majors in Percussion Methods classes.
• Teach other classes contingent upon the candidate’s expertise, interest, and needs of the department.
• Maintain active scholarly and/or creative activities.
• Maintain service to the university, community, and profession.
• Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with colleagues, students, staff, and the larger community.
• Demonstrates consistent on-time attendance.
• Adept at using online platforms, including university systems and social media.
• Regularly use basic computing skills.
• Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
• Assist with all operations of the University Band program, both concert and athletic.
• Assist with and coordinate operational logistics for the Marching Mocs and Moc Fleet Pep Band.
• Serve as the primary instructor to the marching percussion program for both the Marching Mocs and Moc Fleet Pep Bands.
• Collaborate frequently with the Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands.
• Assist with the operation of recruitment events.
• Transport large percussion instruments, especially for marching band, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Qualifications

• Minimum degree: Masters in Percussion Performance required, doctorate preferred.
• Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college/university level as a studio percussion instructor, with a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching in all areas of percussion instruction and in various genres and styles of music.
• Evidence of successful teaching experience at the high school level and/or the college level with marching bands, drum lines, front ensembles, including front ensemble electronics and sound amplification, is required. 
• Evidence of successful writing, arranging, and editing of music at the high school level and/or the college level with marching percussion, including: drum lines, front ensembles, and electronic instruments.
