Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

  • This person will perform skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance related to Facilities Management operations and County support services including high visibility landscaping, memorial tree and nursery maintenance, and project construction on County-owned and leased facilities. 

  • This person is responsible to provide a clean and safe environment for visitors, tenants and employees while being a crew leader and working independently with minimal supervision.

  • The employee in this position is classified as an essential employee and will be required to work when the County offices are officially closed due to inclement weather, natural disaster, other emergency situations, etc. Weekend/Holiday work as required

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • This person reports to the Assistant Grounds Superintendent at the Park location.

  • This person may work directly with other grounds personnel and/or function as a crew leader working with seasonal grounds workers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance on County owned and leased properties, includes operating hand and power tools (i.e. chainsaw, power pruner, weed whacker, handsaw, pruner, leaf blower, snow blower, etc.)

  • Assist the Asst. Grounds Superintendent with the memorial tree program

  • Assist the Asst. Grounds Superintendent with the maintenance and planting in the Dr. John Moss Tree Nursery

  • Assist the Asst. Grounds Superintendent with the maintenance of the Garden of Five Senses and other high-visibility landscaped bed areas

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance on County owned and leased properties, includes operating medium to heavy equipment (i.e. commercial mower, tractor, skid loader, snow plow, etc.)

  • Assist Grounds Crew with routine grounds maintenance at other FM locations

  • Assist Trails Crew with tree/or trail work at other FM locations

  • Apply herbicide, as needed at all FM locations

  • Safely operate a pickup truck (with or without trailer) / equipment

  • Snow removal duties at all County properties including shoveling, snow blowing, plowing with truck and/or tractor

  • Ability to follow County and Departmental Policies and Procedures

OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES

  • Plow or salt Park roads and parking lots

  • Perform basic equipment and vehicle maintenance

  • Oversee seasonal work in the field

  • Ability to operate a computer, navigate the internet and use Windows platform (Outlook, Excel, Word): Creates, sends, receives, reads and responds to email and works with a computer based work order system to track tasks

  • Paint

  • Collect and haul trash and recyclables

  • Perform janitorial/custodial duties

  • Perform playground maintenance

  • Perform other duties, as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum one year experience in commercial lawn care, landscaping  or related position or equivalent training in vocational or trade school

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Applicant must have basic computer skills that include using email, navigating the internet, creating spreadsheets and documents

  • Athletic field maintenance a plus, (i.e. baseball infield grooming, turf grass management, basketball and tennis court maintenance, etc.

  • Equipment experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions

  • Ability to work well with minimum supervision, self-motivated.

  • Ability to work well alone and with others

  • Ability to assist supervisor in his/her absence

  • PA Dept. of Agriculture Core Applicator Certification and PA Dept. of Ag Category 23 Applicator Certification is preferred or ability to achieve both within one year of employment. Continued employment is contingent upon meeting this requirement.
