Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Student Health Services, the Registered Nurse provides comprehensive health services to students, promoting their physical and mental well-being and supporting their academic success.
Job Description:
Evaluates and treats injured and ill students and coordinates care plans for those with chronic medical conditions, consults with NP or MD as needed, contacts parents/guardians as appropriate, coordinates referrals and prescription refills for MSSD students, orders medications as prescribed, and maintains patient confidentiality.
Coordinates student health needs, provides health education, and ensures compliance with health policies and regulations.
Serves as the administrative liaison between SHS and Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD); and serves as the main point of contact between SHS and the DC Health Department’s surveillance team for communicable diseases and immunizations for MSSD students.
Participates in quality improvement (QI) initiatives to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of health services.
Administers medicines, provides medication administration training to MSSD dorm staff, and instructs dorm staff on use of the assessment algorithm when treating students for minor illness or injury.
Works in collaboration with MSSD’s Admissions Office to process incoming students’ medical records, identify students whose medical needs require nursing management, enact nursing care plans to ensure these medical needs are met, and monitor vaccine compliance.
Interprets normal lab results and consults with physician or nurse practitioner on all abnormal readings, and informs parents/guardians of lab results as appropriate, and maintains patient confidentiality.
Participates in New Student Orientations, demonstrates the ability to work well independently and as a supportive team member, and maintains an on-call availability to serve as a consultant to the MSSD Dorm staff.
Participates in the development and implementation of SHS policies and procedures.
Follows OSHA guidelines, assesses environmental safety and intervenes appropriately, and sterilizes medical instruments as needed.
Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment or facility malfunction, ensures proper inventory of supplies, and maintains emergency bag readiness.
Facilitates hospital and specialists referrals as indicated, ensures proper forms are included, and requests ASL interpreting services for students when needed.
Develops health care resources within the local community for referral and support purposes, and develops and implements health care protocols for MSSD.
Serves as the main point of contact between SHS and the DC Health Department’s surveillance team for communicable diseases and immunizations (under the age of 18); and ensures medical information is shared to maintain the continuity of care for all students.
Participates in quality improvement (QI) activities, including data collection, analysis, and the development and implementation of interventions to improve student health outcomes and the delivery of health services.
Collaborates with the Director to identify areas for QI and develop QI projects.
Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of QI initiatives and reports findings to relevant stakeholders.
