Position Summary
The Registered Nurse Lead (RN) – CVICU ECMO Coordinator is responsible for staff supervision, training, equipment maintenance and data collection for patients who are identified for Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) as a cardiac or respiratory lifesaving intervention. The coordinator role requires development into ECLS/ECMO standards and training to become the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) content expert for survey readiness and program accreditation.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive support and education to ECMO patients and their families, including counseling, delivering up-to-date educational materials, and coordinating ongoing education throughout the continuum of care. 
  • Serves as the primary clinical resource for complex Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS), functioning as the ECMO “primer” during cannulations, transports, and emergency events, while providing real-time coaching to maintain circuit integrity and patient safety. 
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop, revise, and implement ECMO policies, procedures, and guidelines in alignment with ELSO and regulatory requirements. 
  • Leads staff education and competency programs, including orientation, curriculum development, training delivery (classroom and simulation/wet labs), and ongoing competency validation for ECMO specialists and CVICU staff. 
  • Coordinates ECMO staffing and daily specialist assignments to ensure appropriate service coverage in collaboration with leadership. 
  • Oversees inventory management, monitors ECMO equipment (including pump hours), and ensures adequate availability of supplies. 
  • Supports quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) initiatives by monitoring patient outcomes, conducting audits, identifying risks, and implementing corrective actions to maintain high standards of care. 
  • Collects, analyzes, and presents clinical and program data, identifying trends and ensuring achievement of program goals. 
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on quality initiatives and research activities related to ECMO care. 
  • May have CVICU Clinical Lead responsibilities such as scheduling and developing a coordinated on-call and standby list

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Minimum Requirements
    • Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing 
    • License and Certifications:
      • Must have a Valid current Arizona Nursing License or compact state license and ability to become Arizona Licensed in 30 days. 
      • BLS and ALCS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Experience:
      • 5 years of recent critical care nursing experience
      • 1 to 2 years of ECMO pump / bedside nurse experience or experience as an ECMO Coordinator
      • 1 year of clinical education experience
  • Preferred Requirements
    • Education: Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing
    • Certifications:
      • AmSECT CES-A (Adult) or ELSO E-AEC (Adult ECMO Practitioner)
      • CCRN (AACN)
      • CSC Certification (AACN)
    • Experience: 1 year of clinical education experience/prog
