Manager, Continuation Engineering

About the role

Under minimal supervision of the VP of R&D, the Continuation Engineering Manager supervises, directs and coordinates activities of the continuation engineering personnel.  This person acts as the primary contact for other departments to provide support regarding continuation engineering activities including but not limited to: product quality, supplier related, margin improvement, and manufacturing issues.  The Continuation Engineering Manager is responsible for establishing and driving schedules to resolve issues as quickly as possible while maintaining a high level of quality through testing and qualification of the solution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise and coordinate work activities of Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Designers, Drafters, and others in the group.
  • Evaluate incoming Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and other issues, prioritize and assign them to group members as required to resolve expeditiously
  • Assist group members as necessary to determine root cause of issues
  • Establish deliverables and due dates for projects, coordinate activities to meet these, and drive process improvements to reduce these
  • Verify deliverables of group members are complete and accurate
  • Ensure that cross-functional requirements are taken into account and all appropriate departments/personnel are involved in projects
  • Track completion of key tasks and projects, communicate status as required to management and other departments
  • Work with the sourcing group and potentially directly with suppliers to maintain quality, control cost and to resolve component sourcing and obsolescence issues
  • Works with other departments to expedite production changeovers and special orders when needed
  • Coordinate activities with other departments to resolve engineering related intercompany issues between product companies and production manufacturing and distribution facilities
  • Conduct regular meetings with continuation engineering group and provide assistance, mentoring, and training as needed
  • Conduct yearly performance evaluations of subordinates and address personnel issues
  • Coordinate continuation activities in both the Brooklyn Park and Querétaro, Mexico production sites.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BSME or BSEE preferred) or equivalent engineering education, MS, MOT, or MBA desirable

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 8 years of related engineering experience, of which at least 2 years of supervisory /management /project management experience overseeing multidisciplinary engineering teams

KNOWLEDGE & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

  • High proficiency in project management and product management processes
  • Strong knowledge of engineering change management processes
  • Strong knowledge of engineering design and technical principals
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, fluid, software, and other engineering disciplines
  • Ability to read, and interpret, and markup engineering drawings
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing methods, processes, and materials as related to engineering requirements for product design, development and production
  • Ability to understand how decisions affect: sales, warranty, customer satisfaction, product safety
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple teams, tasks, and projects in a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Excellent decision-making and rationalization ability
  • High proficiency in problem solving processes and creativity
  • Willingness to travel on an as needed basis to support group objectives
  • Ability to interact with all functional areas and all organizational levels

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Understanding of CAD Software and PLM.
  • Proficiency in use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems
