About the role

Insider is hiring a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join our Site Reliability Engineering Team.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

Our small but mighty SRE team is a crucial resource for our tech and product teams, our journalists, and the millions of people who read our stories across the world by providing secure and reliable infrastructure, actionable alerts, and transparent metrics to make sure our site runs smoothly.

The Role & Team:

As a Senior SRE you will partner with tech leadership to make impactful decisions, mentor more junior SREs and help them grow into experts, and tackle complex, hands-on projects using a variety of cutting-edge technologies.

Does the idea of having a 5 week+ on call rotation with an incredibly low paging volume excite you? Are you passionate about applying best practices for infrastructure as code? Are you deeply familiar with Kubernetes as a deployment environment and the various usages of GitOps? Do you thrive in environments where flexibility is paramount and changes to the status quo are encouraged if a better solution is available?

If your answer is “yes” to the questions above, then come join us at Insider!

This role reports directly to the SRE Engineering Manager and sits on the Site Reliability Engineering team in Product & Technology. This role will be remote.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with modern EKS infrastructure and deployment tools like fluxcd and argocd
  • Support hosted database platforms like Mongo Atlas
  • Mentor other team members within your areas of subject matter expertise, to avoid creating knowledge silos
  • Build and improve CI/CD tooling and pipelines, working with software development engineers to ensure our self-service solutions fit the needs of the company
  • Fulfill basic SRE duties, including on-call rotation, troubleshooting, and automation engineering
  • Collaborate with our internal Test Engineering team to help ensure end-to-end quality
  • Write and maintain documentation
  • Work directly with third-party vendors to fix issues
  • Add the minimal amount of complexity to monitor, deploy, and scale a continuously growing environment
  • Engage in and improve the whole lifecycle of services—from inception and design, through deployment, operation and refinement

The Ideal Candidate Has:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of AWS, GCP, and the administration of Kubernetes clusters
  • Experience defining your infrastructure as code using Terraform, Cloudformation, or Pulumi
  • Ability to code effectively in Bash, Python, or Go
  • Familiarity with Github or other modern CI/CD systems (Jenkins, GitLab, etc.)
  • Ability to effectively communicate directly and across various time zones with other engineers, product managers, and directors
  • Deep familiarity with monitoring platforms like Cloudwatch, Datadog, ELK, and New Relic
  • Excitement to test, build, and evangelize new technologies that solve problems for the SRE team and the wider organization
  • Familiarity with GitOps principles and are comfortable working in a GitOps driven environment
  •  5+ years of experience in devops or SRE style roles

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: $150,000 - $220,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies)
  • Unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of parental leave
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Matched and vested 401k plan
  • Access to resources for financial planning guidance, family planning services, mental health reachout and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
  • Additional benefits include commuter benefits, phone reimbursement, gym membership discounts, and more

Are you passionate about this opportunity, but worried that you don’t have 100% of the experience we’re looking for? We still want to hear from you! Apply online and let us know why you would make a great addition to the Insider community.
