Qualifications

Programmer / Data analyst

The Population Science and Network Medicine Division at The Brigham & Women’s Hospital is looking for a talented programmer / analyst to join our Systems Genetics and Genomics group on a full-time basis (40 hours per week).

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and part of Mass General Brigham, the largest recipient of NIH funding among independent hospitals.  The Division of Population Science and Network Medicine is a research division within the Department of Medicine whose goal is to define the etiology of complex diseases and to reclassify them using network- and systems-based approaches.

Our group, led by Dr. Michael Cho, Associate Professor of Medicine, and Dr. Matthew Moll, Assistant Professor of Medicine, focuses on chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung disease. Funding for this position is part of an active R01 NHLBI grant. We have access to some of the largest and most well described population-based and respiratory disease cohorts in the world, as part of COPDGene, Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed), and the International COPD Genetics Consortium, and investigators in the UK and Mass General Brigham Biobanks, All of Us, and Million Veteran Program. In these cohorts, data to be analyzed includes whole-genome genetic, RNA-Seq, epigenome, proteomic, and metabolomic data from blood and lung tissue, in bulk and in single cells. Methods include genetic association, differential expression, and integrative omics analysis, including application of machine learning, development of deep learning models, network, and systems pharmacology methods.

The work will be performed as part of an interdisciplinary team, consisting of geneticists and genetic epidemiologists, biostatisticians, computational biologists, and translational scientists and clinicians. Successful candidates will work closely with students, programmers, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty.

Principal duties and responsibilities: Develop and use new and existing computational pipelines for analysis of research data.  Efficiently leverage local compute, public and private cloud.  Oversee data processing, dissemination, and access to high-throughput sequencing data.  Provide statistical and analytic support.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with one year of relevant work experience. Master’s degree preferred.

Proficiency in R / Bioconductor and/or Python (both preferred)

Experience in the linux environment and command line

Excellent communication (oral and written) and documentation skills, and ability to adhere to reproducible research standards and version control

Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background and experience in genomic data analysis.

Qualified candidates should submit their resume, sample code (GitHub repository preferred), the names of two references, and a cover letter to Dr. Matthew Moll (matthew.moll@channing.harvard.edu).  Promising candidates will be invited for interviews, a presentation, and live coding session.  Funding for this position is available immediately, but start time is flexible.
