This position can be located at any Duke Energy facility in or near the supported counties- Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion and Sumter.  The exact location will be determined at the time of offer based on business needs.

This position will be give a Duke Energy commuter vehicle.

Job Summary


The Government Relations Manager II (GCRM II) position is intended for professionals who have the experience to demonstrate proficiency in the fundamentals of local government relations, public affairs, policy advocacy, and community engagement. The GCRM II is the company’s primary point-of-contact for all local government officials within Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties and regularly collaborates with various Duke Energy business units to further company initiatives with minimal oversight and daily direction.

Responsibilities

Relationship Management

  • Develops and manages relationships with local government officials and key community stakeholders in Duke Energy’s service area in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties.
  • Partners with strategic community-based organizations to enhance the company’s reputation and educate key community stakeholders on Duke Energy’s business initiatives.
  • Identifies opportunities to leverage relationships to further company goals.
  • Responds to requests for assistance from local government officials and key community stakeholders related to Duke Energy’s business activities.
  • Serves as the company’s primary point-of-contact with local Emergency Management officials in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties during natural disasters and other emergencies.

Local Government Advocacy

  • Contacts and confers with local government officials to influence the passage, defeat, or amendment to local ordinances or legislation that impacts Duke Energy’s business objectives in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties. 
  • Represents Duke Energy before local governing bodies and serves as primary company point of contact for local elected officials and city/county staff..
  • Studies and evaluates proposed local ordinances and legislation to determine impact on the company’s business objectives.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of Duke Energy’s public policy, regulatory, and business positions.

Project and Issues Management

  • Leverages relationships with local government officials and key community stakeholders in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties and knowledge of the company’s operational needs and business goals to diagnose operational issues, identify pathways to resolution, and create or protect value for the company.
  • Develops and maintains wide-ranging knowledge of electric utility industry and Duke Energy operational processes to engage internal partners in the resolution of escalated issues.
  • Assists Duke Energy business units in the siting and construction of company infrastructure projects.
  • Leads Duke Energy’s Liaison organization in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties during natural disasters to respond to critical infrastructure outages, provide update on power restoration activities, and resolve escalated issues.

Philanthropy

  • Develops and implements a local giving strategy to strategically deploy company philanthropic funds to support nonprofit organizations and community needs in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties.
  • Organizes and participates in Duke Energy employee volunteer events.   
     

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Communications, Business Administration or other related field
  • In addition to required education, minimum seven (7) years of relevant work experience
  • In lieu of required degree, High School/GED and minimum ten (10) years relevant work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior public affairs and advocacy experience.
  • Experience working with local governments.
  • Experience developing and implementing government relations and public affairs strategies.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
