Overview:

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) performs a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the nuclear enterprise from nonproliferation to research and development (R&D) pertaining to nuclear materials processing, management, and transportation. The Facility and Systems Security group within NND at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for a part-time Senior Data Manager position.

 

The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of projects primarily sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD). Other project sponsors may include the NNSA Office of International Nuclear Security (INS), NNSA Office of Radiological Security (ORS), Department of State (DoS), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD). The candidate will draw on years of experience in the radiation detection field to advise and mentor the current generation of radiation detection and analysis experts on the storage, management, integration and display of information relevant to counter nuclear smuggling systems. A primary role will  involve data-based assessments for system effectiveness, efficiency, and suitability. A secondary role is to act as a consultant for the product owners for various ORNL-developed software products used to maintain and report on the status and performance of counter nuclear smuggling systems

Purpose
The Senior Data Manager will provide Research and Development (R&D) guidance and experience to the group that strategically advances science and technology, consistent ORNL’s science culture.

The Senior Data Manager will work within a group of peers to provide advice, consultation, and innovative approaches to managing, storing, and displaying data relevant to a globally distributed network of radiation detection sensors.  The Senior Data Manager supports the Facility and Systems Security (FSS) Group; works closely with the ORNL Radiation Inspection Systems Team (RIST) to implement the group’s technical vision; helps develop group and team members to enable their career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; collaborates with members of other data-intensive groups at ORNL to provide cross-discipline approaches; sets, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensures a work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior advisor for the use, implementation, adoption, and improvements for some of ORNL’s online enterprise data storage platforms / terminals.
  • Assist and advise RIST Functional Area Managers in the development of dashboards and other means to convey information on the state of health of radiation detection systems, and assist in the rollout / adoption of those tools with others in the government complex.
  • Review and improve the implementation of reporting tools, based on the outputs of automated data analysis algorithms focused on the performance of radiation detection systems.
  • Interface with federal managers and ORNL RIST team to harmonize ORNL data analysis, software and assessment system support to NSDD.
  • Assist ORNL in the development of guides to enhance user adoption of available tools.
