The Assistant Director will support the mission of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Black Cultural Center and the Center for Latinidad.  Priority activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide oversight to the Black Cultural Center and the Center for Latinidad; make recommendations for resource expansion; establish and nurture a sense of community that results in a sustainable connection between multicultural student organizations and the Centers.
  • Develop LGBTQIA+ Resources, implement WPUNJ’s “Safe Zone” LGBTQ+ awareness and ally training workshop model, etc.
  • Design, implement, and maintain advocacy and support programs and connections for historically underrepresented, marginalized, and under resourced students; inclusive of identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, national origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, ability, age, etc.
  • Design, implement, and maintain intentional educational programming (e.g. programs, events, workshops, and dialogues) that supports social, cultural and global understanding and raises awareness and competency of students
  • Collaborate cross-functionally within Student Development areas to translate cultural competency into purposeful outcomes within student programs; develop and facilitate training for student employees across the division as requested.
  • Develop mentoring programs that support First Generation college students; hiring and supervising mentors.
  • Maintain Center for Diversity & Inclusion, the Black Cultural Center Pioneer Life and Center for Latinidad webpage, prepare and administer internal surveys, monitor and track attendance and participation at key events, etc.
  • Conduct regular assessments and compile monthly and annual reports as directed.
  • Assist in major Student Development Division activities such as New Student Orientations, Welcome Weeks, Homecoming/Family Day, and civic engagement
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the title.

 Qualifications and experience:

  • A Master’s degree in Student Affairs or related field
  • Two or more years’ experience in a related position preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of student development theory.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex inter/intra cultural environment
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations.
  • Well-developed communication skills including a penchant for clarity, active listening, empathy, and an ability to work toward shared understandings.
  • Well-developed organizational, budgeting, assessment, and management skills.
  • Possess an outcome-oriented approach and the capacity to serve as a thought-partner on a wide range of issues.
  • Ability to develop and deliver educational programming to students to address the complexities of privilege and oppression and appreciation of all aspects of social identity and their intersectionality.
  • Technology skills necessary to facilitate the work, including being adept at advanced Excel, and Zoom preferred
