About the role

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Chaplain
  • Location: Elmhurst Hospital
  • Part-Time | 24 hours/week
  • Hours: 7:00pm-7:00am - Thursday and Friday

What you will need:

  • Master of Divinity or equivalency. If equivalency, a letter is required from a certification agency (APC, NACC, ACPE, NAJC) stating that the theological education standards for certification have been met.
  • Four successfully completed units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an accredited ACPE center.
  • Board Certification Eligible or Board-Certified Chaplain in one of the following:
    • Association of Professional Chaplains
    • National Association of Catholic Chaplains
    • National Association of Jewish Chaplains.
    • If board certification eligible, certification must be obtained within 24 months of position start date. Candidate for certification in Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or National Association of Jewish Chaplains.
  • Certification in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing within 6 months of position start date.
  • Minimum of one year chaplaincy experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Available for on call, holiday, and varying shifts.

General Summary:

The Chaplain provides culturally attentive emotional/spiritual care and support to patients, families, and staff throughout the Edward Hospital Campus. Flexibility and objectivity to offer support to all faith traditions and belief systems. Actively participates in the delivery of spiritual care adhering to the standards of practice of a nationally recognized certifying body. Supports the Spiritual Care Department staff and serves as back up to the Manager.

What you will do:

1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population served.  This includes knowledge of the physical, psychological, emotional, and relevant life stage needs of patients served.

2. In accordance with system and department policies delivers timely, person-centered spiritual/religious/emotional care to patients, their families, and staff.  This includes but is not limited to needs for spiritual care, crisis response and support, prayer, end of life care, sacramental resources, grief support, ethical concerns, interdisciplinary care, prayer and memorial services.

  • Engages in spiritual needs assessment and develops, documents, and implements a plan of care which may include connecting care recipient(s) with appropriate community resources.
  • Partners with community clergy concerning patient and family religious needs.
  • Collaborates in patient and family goals of care meetings and other interdisciplinary team activities and programs.
  • Promotes patient safety by reporting safety issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives.
  • Identifies complex issues related to medical ethics and refers to available resources for assistance in follow up and resolution.
  • Engages in regular, purposeful rounding on all units.
  • Participates in orientation for New Employees.
  • Assists with facilitating memorial services for families of deceased patients two to three times a year.
  • Conducts Critical Incident Stress Debriefing for staff as necessary.
  • Partners with interdisciplinary staff, Patient Experience staff, and Employee Support Coordinators so as to promote excellent patient, family, and staff care.
  • Provides a variety of community services by request such as, but not limited to, grief support groups.
  • Coordinates Catholic ministries

3. Assists patients and families with Advance Care Planning, completing Advance Directives such as Power of Attorney for Healthcare, and documenting them in the medical record. 

4. Partners with Social Work/Care Coordination to provide education related to Advance Directives and Advance Care Planning.

5. Partners with the Department Manager in developing, implementing, and supporting a Chaplain CPE Resident program.

  • Triages crisis calls while the CPE students are in session.
  • Mentors Chaplain Residents during orientation to their units.

6. Provides morning, presurgical visits.
