Senior Scientist – Vestibular MD

We are seeking an  experienced Senior Research Scientist MD or PhD vestibular scientist for research consultation as needed (16 - 20 hours per week, hours will vary). This vestibular scientist opportunity will be in support of human factors engineering and biomedical research at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Naval Medical Research Unit in Dayton, OH with the vestibular physiology research team. Research efforts will require advising NAMRL scientists and assisting with interrogatories, medical and scientific authoring and editing of research proposals, human use protocols, technical and scientific reports, responses to grants/funding calls; participation in technical review meetings and the preparation and presentation of point papers, technical reports, and other briefings resulting from these meetings, preparation and support of technical summaries and publications resulting from research activities, advising in development of Institutional Review Board protocols for human use research; writing, reviewing, editing, and submitting peer-reviewed articles and technical reports.

Your Main Objectives:

• Serve as a scientific advisor and consultant in human use research studies and analyses to understand human physiological factors associated with military operations in the aviation, space, and related environments especially as they relate to aeromedical standards, altitude effects, aviation safety, neurocognitive/neurophysiological effects, and related areas. Research activities will involve medical and human use research both in the laboratory and in the field. Specific consultation needs include vestibular and balance function, effects of virtual reality in motion environments, and effects of motion on sleep.

• The successful candidate will provide insight to further military research priorities relative to vestibular physiology and function using specialized vestibular physiology research devices, including 6-degrees of freedom motion bases, force plates, and virtual reality devices.

• Consult on the design and conduct of scientific research, identifying Navy relevant topics in the areas of warfighter health and performance and assist/advise in writing research preproposals, research protocols, formal technical reports, and journal publications addressing the above topics. • Consult on the design and conduct of multi-disciplinary scientific research in collaboration with the senior vestibular scientist, participate in drafting proposals for research funding with an emphasis on applied and/or clinical applications. Additionally, the candidate will learn about multidisciplinary, multi-university programs for vestibular/balance research, understand operational needs of the joint fleet, while supporting research in areas that are practicable and pertinent to the United States Navy.

• May advise/guide execution of research projects by determining project completion needs, obtaining/developing laboratory materials, developing research progress, and financial plans, developing documentation and coordinating approval of related of human subjects use and/or animal use documents, and managing resources necessary to meet project goals.

• May provide input to presentations, publications, and other products for non-research technical and general audiences. (All publications are subject to Government review and approval).

• May assist with reporting outcomes, and recommendations through formal meetings, presentations, briefings, technical reports, and publications. (All publications are subject to Government review and approval).

• Assist other investigators in the design and execution of research protocols on human performance issues of interest to the Navy.

• Operate and maintain standard and specialized laboratory equipment.

• Perform statistical analyses using SigmaPlot, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) or Statistical Analysis Software (SAS). Examples of the typical analyses required for successful performance include T-tests, Chi-Square, Analyses of Variance, Multivariate Analyses of Variance, analyses of covariance, multivariate analyses of covariance, correlations, linear regressions, multiple linear regressions, and power analyses.

• Use multiple computer software packages to create spreadsheets and perform statistical routines.

• Independently and proactively prepare mission-relevant proposal applications for physiological, medical, and performance studies.
