The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is seeking a Dental Surgical Assistant for its Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). OMFS offers a full scope of surgical techniques for a variety of problems of the face and mouth. Many of our faculty surgeons have particular expertise in select sub-specialties, including temporomandibular disorder, nerve repair, orthognathic surgery, and cleft lip and palate repair.

This position serves as dental surgical assistant in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) within the College of Dentistry; provides direct, hands-on assistance throughout a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures working for a variety of faculty and resident surgeons; works with dental students; performs x-ray functions; responsible for infection control; prepares and distributes instruments; supports community outreach efforts; stocks supplies; works off-site as scheduled; participates in the establishment and maintenance of a positive, professional, and patient-centered workplace; committed to completion of patient care regardless of pre-assigned work hours; may work occasional scheduled or unscheduled overtime as necessitated by patient care needs.

Monday-Friday and may vary from as early as 7:00 am to as late as 5:00 pm

A dental assistant needs to be able to: use of both hands, dexterity in the fingers and the ability to manipulate instruments, materials, dental hand pieces, and operate dental equipment. The use of feet is necessary to manipulate the rheostat for hand pieces or other dental equipment. The body must be able to work from a dental stool in order to perform most dental procedures. The ability to sit and stand for a duration of time is also necessary. Other specific requirements include color spectrum differentiation; manual dexterity/motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, physical communications; visual acuity and communication/language development. Individuals in this position may be exposed to the following: bloodborne pathogens; chemical hazards (skin irritants); vibrating equipment; use of sharp instruments; and latex.

Required: 4 years’ experience in dental office practices and procedures dental operatory practices and procedures, care of dental equipment, dental clinic procedures, expanded dental duty procedures, forehand assisting techniques; (Including license, if any.) BLS/CPR certification required at all times throughout employment; current radiographer license required at all times throughout employment; dental assisting experience, knowledge with multiple implant systems and a wide variety of dental and dental surgical instruments in a surgical environment.

Desired: Previous experience in an oral & maxillofacial surgery office; experience with medical or surgical assisting highly desired, computer literacy including Microsoft Office and internet/e-mail.
