This role will play a part in the early-stage R&D of an MCFR with an emphasis on the safety case development. In this role the lead will coordinate and prioritize research to investigate the efficacy of safety analysis approaches. The scope of this coordination will span integration with the testing and design team. Ideally, a candidate will be able to understand the high level aspects of the design to develop a complete picture of the safety case development strategy in conjunction with the maturation of the technology. This role will lay the foundation of the methodologies underlying the safety analysis used in support of a large MCFR.
Responsibilities
• Prioritize early stage research in support of the safety case of a demonstration-sized MCFR
• Evaluate design features and their efficacy in support of safety functions
• Work across the design and safety team to develop novel source term methodologies
• Support NRC interactions on novel aspects of the design and safety case
Key Qualifications and Skills
• B.S. in nuclear, chemical, mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering (or similar), with a minimum of 6 years’ experience in the nuclear field; or M.S. with a minimum of 3 years’ experience; or Ph.D. with a minimum of 2 years’ experience.
• Knowledge of NRC and/or DOE safety basis requirements in support of reactor deployment
• Experience performing nuclear reactor safety analysis (e.g., transient, source term dose/consequence, containment)
• Strategic thinking and cross discipline coordination in support of technology maturation
• Familiar with Risk-Informed Performance-Based Technology Inclusive Guidance for Non-Light Water Reactor Licensing Basis Development
Bonus
