Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a strong writer and communications specialist to support the Human Resources organization in its efforts to recruit, develop, and retain an exceptional workforce. This position requires someone who is passionate about meeting the needs of an internal audience, and who can efficiently provide regular information and updates on key processes, initiatives, and benefits. The role also entails providing strategic support for campaigns. Candidates should possess experience across a range of communications disciplines, including writing, web content, social media, and executing strategic communications plans.

 

The Human Resources Directorate at ORNL serves the needs of over 7,000 employees, research and operations experts, and professionals, who hail from over 80 countries. Communications plays an integral role in championing an environment that makes ORNL a great place to work and the best place to do science.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Write news and feature stories on HR projects and initiatives for dissemination on ORNL’s internal news platforms.
  • Work with HR Communications Coordinator to implement strategies for communicating HR functions and services to ORNL staff, management, and leadership. Examples include open enrollment, benefits, wellness, and performance management.
  • Assist in implementing a content calendar to regularly communicate HR initiatives to ORNL staff.
  • Maintain HR’s social media presence.
  • Work with HR, IT, and Communications staff to ensure HR’s internal and external websites are informative, up to date, and aligned with ORNL web design standards.
  • Regularly meet with HR Communications Coordinator and HR subject matter experts to share and receive feedback, and modify plans, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with technical editors, graphic designers, and other ORNL communications teams to ensure adherence to grammar, style and brand guidelines and share best practices.
  • Comply with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience producing communications products for general audiences.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience fulfilling urgent requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Experience writing for and supporting communications for the HR profession.
  • Ability to develop, update, and maintain informative and compelling website content, adhering to a consistent schedule to keep information fresh.
  • Ability to support communications projects from concept to completion within deadlines and in collaboration with other team members.
  • Experience working in SharePoint, WordPress, or other content management systems.
  • Ability to balance multiple demands with a sharp attention to detail to perform professionally and capably under pressure.
  • Previous experience with DOE or other government agencies.
