Your work environment

The Retail  Architecture team is enabling cross ING Retail countries worldwide with architectural and technology designs and decisions. In addition supporting ING’s Retail countries with execution of and alignment with these technology choices. The team focus on the full scope of architecture  business, application , information and infrastructure architecture. The key objectives  are on enabling adopting of scalable tech and driving synergies and standardization of business solutions across the different markets.  There is close cooperation with the local IT teams and CIO’s in the Retail countries and the head office functions.

Job description

Effective use of information technology is a key factor in supporting the continued success and sustainability of ING. Retail countries are investing strategically in innovative IT solutions to provide efficient and effective support for the business. The Retail EA team has a crucial role to play in this regard, being involved in all kinds of projects from head office and the countries such as upgrade of core banking systems, renewal of channels, roll-out of data lake moving to public cloud etc.

The architect can be assigned to projects with a broad scope (business, application and infrastructure) which demands a broad experience as architect. The specific demand is for an architect with a  background in application development and  architecture that can guide and overlook several development initiatives. You should strive for harmonization of scalable technology and knowledge sharing between the countries and head office.

Key focus areas:

  • Design solutions for business initiatives and guide development teams.
  • Align with countries in adopting global foundational services.
  • Able to translate technology and vision into executable steps that can be delivered.
  • Understand local specifics and intermediate with global service providers on solutions.
  • Drive opportunities for standardization together with the countries.

Who are we looking for?

You have a strong background and proven track record in enterprise and specifically application design and  architecture, preferably in an international context. You will need to have ambitious targets for your achievements and be able to share your positive energy with your business partners across Retail and other lines of business of ING. You must have outstanding social skills and the capacity to communicate effectively in an international environment. Collaboration and facilitation skills are key in this role. You must be transparent and able to facilitate discussions and alternative solutions.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Enterprise Architecture
  • Retail banking business and products
  • Understanding of the retail banking architecture components such as core banking, middleware, API platforms and channels
  • Cloud native development experience to support our hybrid multi cloud strategy transition.  
  • Demonstrates mastery of Experience Design skills (customer journeys, service blueprinting e.g. IAF, C4. Togaf etc.)
  • Preferably coding experience (Java, Phyton etc.)
  • Owns the resilience and latency of the whole IT chain;
  • Track record in reducing complexity and reducing technical debt

Required competences

  • Demonstrates co-creation skills (workshop facilitation, guiding, constraining, selling – telling);
  • Demonstrates “convincing people” skills based on facts and business cases
  • Experience in international collaboration (differences in cultures and context); Demonstrates abstraction & problem solving skills; (e.g. mastery of enterprise integration patterns)
  • Outside-in thinker: visits conferences, potentially gives a talk now and then
  • Empathy and ability to think from somebody’s else point of view
  • Targeted influencing.
  • Energetic/positive thinker.
  • Open to your environment/perceptive.
  • Determined/persevering and a good decision maker.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Resistance to stress.
  • Out-of-the-box/innovative change-oriented attitude.
  • Speaks the “language” of engineers to guide towards a target architecture
  • Fluent in English verbally and in writing, Dutch is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to Retail countries when needed
