Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia seeks an experienced Exhibit Maintenance & Fabrication Supervisor to join our dynamic Exhibits Development team. You will ensure that all exhibits are maintained to create unforgettable experiences for our guests.


In this role, you will be at the heart of maintaining and enhancing both permanent and traveling exhibits, ensuring that each display is visually compelling and functionally engaging. You will manage the upkeep, basic fabrication, and installation of museum exhibits, fixtures, and interactive elements across the Science Museum of Virginia and its affiliated sites, including the Danville Science Center and Northern Virginia Science Center locations. You will also oversee the logistics of our traveling exhibition program, making sure each exhibit aligns with the museum’s mission and vision. From installations to regular maintenance, your expertise will play a key part in providing a world-class experience to our diverse audience.

Minimum Qualifications

An ideal candidate will possess experience leading a production team through cycles of fabrication, build-out, installation, and take-down, tackling projects of varying scope and complexity. Be able to read and correctly interpret design drawings; creatively solve challenges relating to logistics, staging, and loading of exhibition fixtures, and to devise methods of joining and assembly, including with large-scale and fragile items. Excellent oral communication skills and problem-solving skills, preventative maintenance planning, attention to detail, and technical aptitude in repair, electronics, woodworking, painting, and trade skills. Extensive knowledge of 3D CAD design as well as knowledge of fabrication techniques and machinery. Candidate must be able to oversee the management of tasks with the appropriate balance of delegation. Be able to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), frequent standing/walking, pushing/pulling, bending, and reaching on a daily basis.

Additional Considerations

Extensive technical training and experience in applied arts, industrial design, and fabrication. Basic understanding of computer component hardware and Operating System functionality. Knowledge of museum exhibit and conservation parameters, including proper materials and sealing methods for display cases, is a plus.
