Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Under minimum supervision and according to established policies and procedures, oversees the work of subordinate personnel within an assigned section or on the afternoon or evening shifts. Cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, assembles and dispenses instruments and supplies.

Essential Job Functions

  • ​Oversees the work of subordinate personnel assigned to section or shift.

  • Coordinates a timely, orderly flow of work in each area.

  • Assist in training and orientation of new personnel in departmental policies and procedures, aseptic techniques, instrument identification, tray assembly, rotation of supplies, processing, sterilizing, Steam and Ethylene Oxide (ETO). And delivery of sterile items.

  • Performs various related duties such as monthly reports, annual goals and objectives, phone inquiries, control inventory, accurate recordkeeping, attendance at special meetings and classes as necessary, assist with timekeeping. May be assigned to work another shift.

  • Supervises and maintains work area in clean and orderly condition.  Makes rounds and inspect supplies and equipment within the facility.

  • Inventories/stocks and delivers supplies, carts, equipment to all facility areas as needed.  Determines adequate levels of reserve supplies for routine use and emergency situations. Rotates stock, inspecting for outdates, ensuring stock for perioperative room is located to designated areas. Notifies supply chain supervisor of missing items on case cart pick sheets.

  • Fulfills surgical patient material needs by building case cart requisitions and immediate requests as required, and delivers items to the end user by various transportation modes within the facility as part of supply management including perioperative and cardiovascular operating rooms

  • Maintains and helps establish quality assurance programs by performing tests to insure proper operation of all sterilization equipment and keeps records of same.  Interprets graphs and data verifying safe operation of sterilizing equipment.  Notifies Supervisor when equipment is in need of repair.

  • Keeps current regarding trends and techniques through reading, in-services, and other educational programs in the Central Service field.

  • Continually monitors and maintains safety standards to assure compliance with federal, state, local and department codes and regulations.

  • Supports Managerial decisions.

  • Responsible to coordinate daily operations and respond to operational problems.

  • Is responsible for performing all other duties as assigned, may include working as a technician.

Licensing/Certification

Central Service Technician training course and be certified by Certification Board of Sterile Processing & Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association of Healthcare Central Services Material Management (IAHCSMM) ; or have five years of hands on experience in the decontamination, wrap and sterilization area of processing. (Required)

Must be certified or willing to take the certification course within one year of accepting job.

Education

High School Diploma or GED

Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) certification by Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) - must be certified or willing to take the certification course within 6 months of accepting endo responsibilities. (Required)

Work Experience

Three years’ experience in Central Service or equivalent combination of education and experience, including training and aseptic techniques. (Required)

Minimum of one year experience in endo processing when accepting endo responsibilities. (Required)
